Giveaway-Shadow of Night

SHADOW OF NIGHT by Deborah Harkness, the #1 New York Times bestselling sequel to A
Discovery of Witches, came out in paperback on May 28! Not only have nearly 1.5 million of these two books combined sold in the U.S., but a film is in development from Warner Bros.

SHADOW OF NIGHT picks up exactly where A Discovery of Witches left off: Diana Bishop and Matthew Clairmont, a witch historian and vampire geneticist respectively, have timewalked to Elizabethan England on their hunt for a magical alchemical manuscript, Ashmole 782—its sudden appearance and sudden disappearance have upended the delicately ordered world of magical creatures (witches, vampires, and daemons), threatening to unleash unprecedented metaphysical chaos.

Join Harkness and her editor Carole DeSanti, the author of The Unruly Passions of EugĂ©nie R, for a virtual book event on BookTalk Nation on June 4th at 2pm EST.  Fans can join by phone and buy personalized copies of the book by ordering online here.

Book Review and Giveaway!- Easy

I just finished reading Easy by Tamarra Webber.

From Goodreads:

A girl who believes trust can be misplaced, promises are made to be broken, and loyalty is an illusion. A boy who believes truth is relative, lies can mask unbearable pain, and guilt is eternal. Will what they find in each other validate their conclusions, or disprove them all?

When Jacqueline follows her longtime boyfriend to the college of his choice, the last thing she expects is a breakup two months into sophomore year. After two weeks in shock, she wakes up to her new reality: she's single, attending a state university instead of a music conservatory, ignored by her former circle of friends, and failing a class for the first time in her life.

Leaving a party alone, Jacqueline is assaulted by her ex's frat brother. Rescued by a stranger who seems to be in the right place at the right time, she wants nothing more than to forget the attack and that night--but her savior, Lucas, sits on the back row of her econ class, sketching in a notebook and staring at her. Her friends nominate him to be the perfect rebound.

When her attacker turns stalker, Jacqueline has a choice: crumple in defeat or learn to fight back. Lucas remains protective, but he's hiding secrets of his own. Suddenly appearances are everything, and knowing who to trust is anything but easy.

I really really liked this book.  Because of its sensitive topic, I'm not sure if it's right to say that I enjoyed it.  But boy did I just get completely into it.  I'm not sure if its because its considred a "new adult" novel (I think that's what they're calling the stories that take place in college) so that it wasn't as juvenile as some of the YA books can be or if it's just that the writing was so great.  But yeah, it had me hooked.

Rape and attempted rape is such a serious topic.  I think this book handled it really well.  I think the author captured what I must imagine the victim must feel like and go through.  And I loved the idea of the self-defense class.  Such a great thing for college girls to do.

Jaqueline was a great character.  I could completely sympathize with her following a boyfriend and then getting dumped and feeling lost.  She just seemed completely real.  And then there was her roommate, Erin, who was a sorority girl.  She could so easily have been they stereotypical air-headed sorority girl, but thankfully the author decided not to portray her this way.  I loved how she was bubbly but smart and had a strong backbone and morals.  And Lucas.  Yum!  Bad boy with a fierce protective streak.  His story broke my heart.  I can't even imagine having to go through what he went through.  But he and Jacqueline's chemistry was hot!

I cannot reccommend this book enough!  This book had it all for me: an important topic, great characters, and a hot romance!

I gave this book a rating of 4.5/5.

This book fulfills items in the following challenges:
2012 Reading Challenge 150+: 85
Completely Contemp Challenge 2012: 2012-16

Once Excerpt and Giveaway!

Today I am honored to be able to post an excerpt from Once by Anna Carey.  I am loving the Eve series!  You can my review of Once here.

This excerpt is from the first chapters of ONCE. After spending several months in Califia, Eve has been kidnapped by one of the King’s soldiers. She’s taken to the City of Sand, a post-apocalyptic Las Vegas. Here she sees the Palace for the first time and discovers the fate that awaits her...

The Jeep was turning left, cutting up a long road that snaked toward a massive white building. Rows of government Jeeps sat out front. Soldiers were stationed along a strip of narrow trees, machine guns slung across their backs. I stared up at the expansive structure. The main entrance was lined with sculptures—winged horses, angels, women with their heads cut off. After driving so many miles we were here. The Palace.

The King was waiting for me.

Stark took me from the Jeep, his hand clamping down on my arm. I could barely breathe as we entered the circular marble lobby. The King’s face had haunted me for months. I thought of the photo I’d grown up with in School. His thin grey hair hung over his forehead. His skin was loose around his jowls and his beady eyes were always watching, following you wherever you went.

Soldiers milled about the lobby, some talking, others pacing in front of a fountain. Stark took me through a set of gold doors and into a small mirrored elevator. He punched a code into the keypad inside. The doors slid shut and then we were moving, up, up, my stomach rocking as the floors flew past—fifty gone, then fifty more.

“You’re going to regret this,” I said, straining against the plastic rope around my wrists. “I’ll tell him what you did. How your men threw me to the ground in that parking lot. You threatened to kill me.” I looked down at the gash in my arm, where the blood was crusted black.

Stark shook his head. “Whatever it takes,” he said, his voice flat. “Those were my orders. Do whatever it takes to bring you here.” Then he turned to me, his eyes bloodshot. He clutched the collar of my shirt and pulled me toward him so my face was just inches from his. “Those men you killed were like brothers to me. They served with me every day for three years. The King will never punish you for what you did, but I will make sure you never forget what happened that day.”

The doors opened before us with a terrifying bing! Stark’s nails dug into my arm as he led me to a room across the carpeted hall. “You’ll wait for him here.” Then he pulled a knife from his belt and sliced the plastic restraints in two. My hands tingled from the sudden rush of blood to my fingers.

The door closed. I leapt up and grabbed the handle, knowing before I even tried it that it would be locked. A long mahogany table sat in the center of the room, surrounded by a few heavy chairs. A massive window looked out onto the City, a two-foot ledge just a few inches below. I went to the glass, wedging my fingers beneath the pane, straining against it. “Please,” I muttered under my breath. “Please just open.”

“They’re sealed shut,” a voice said. I turned. Standing in the doorway was a man of about sixty. He had gray hair and thin, papery skin.

I stepped away from the window, my hands dropping to my sides. He wore a deep-blue suit and a silk tie, the New American crest embroidered on his lapel. He stalked forward, taking one slow lap around me, his eyes scanning my tangled auburn hair, the linen shirt soaked through with sweat, the scrapes around my wrists from where I’d been bound. He studied the wound on my arm. When he finally finished his survey he stood before me, then reached out and stroked my cheek. “My beautiful girl,” he said, running his thumb over my brow. “You’re here.”

I am also able to give away a copy of Once!

Short Story by Alyson Noel and Giveaway!

Today I am honored to be able to post an Ever-Daire short story.  Ever is from The Immortals and she meets Daire from Fated.  This brings Alyson Noel's bestselling and new series together.

DAIRE MEETS EVER

a short story by
Alyson Noël

When she’s not crossing and uncrossing her legs, fussing with her cuticles, and/or riffling through her bag, Jennika tries to engage me in a conversation I’d rather not have. A wad of gum smacking between her back teeth when she says, “Reminds me of Vegas.”

I survey the place. Taking in walls glossed with pale green paint—the color of cucumber meat—the color of calm—along with worn linoleum grey tiled floors left to bubble in the places where they’re not already torn. Her assessment so far off the mark, so opposite the seedy glitz and glam of Vegas, I don’t even respond.

I just close my eyes and slide toward the edge of the curved plastic seat that’s attached to both the floor and the wall. Everything in this place is bolted to something.  It’s an attempt to keep the crazies from hurling the furniture at the white-coated doctors prowling the halls.

This is the house of crazy.

A place to contain the insane.

“Doesn’t it remind you of Vegas?” Jennika’s tone grows louder, more insistent. More than anything, my mom hates to be ignored, especially by me. So I throw her a bone, decide to play along.

"You mean because of all the slot machines? Or is it the ridiculously long line for the all-you-can-eat prime rib buffet?” I prop an eye open, watching as her eyes roll in their sockets, her brow shooting well past her platinum blond bangs with the chunky pinkstripe.  Then I close my eyes again, try to focus on something more pleasant, try toconjure the beautiful boy from my dreams. But the drugs they’ve beenfeeding me, onlyserve to keep him at bay.

“I meant the absence of windows. And, if you’ll notice, there’s not one single clock—not anywhere!” She shakes her head and scowls, annoyed with the decor as much as the predicament I’ve sunk us both into.

“What’d you expect? Ocean views and whirlpools? It’s a mental ward, Jennika.” My voice sounds listless and bored—as though I can barely drum up the energy to participate. “Best not to keep track of how many days they lock you away.”

Jennika sighs, and leans toward me. Her fingers fussing at my long dark hair, arranging it around my shoulders as though it’ll make some kind of difference to anyone other than her. “It’s not a mental ward, Daire—it’s . . .”

I slant my gaze toward hers, waiting to see where her hunt for the perfect euphemism will end.

“It’s a hospital.” She huffs. “A renowned research center. Nothing more, nothing less. Besides, it’s not like you haven’t been here before.”

When she starts to dig through the contents of her purse, searching for some blush to brighten my cheeks, I know it’s time to flee.

In “The World According to Jennika” there’s nothing a good make-over can’t cure. As one of Hollywood’s most sought-after make-up artists, she’s seen first hand the kind of magick a little spackle and glitter can work. But no amount of fluffing and shading is going to change the fact that this place is, indeed, a mental ward—and thatwe’re here because of my recent diagnosis as crazy.

I push off, eager to leave Jennika in her happy place of denial. Eager to get as far from her and these “mental health experts” as I possibly can.

“Where you going?” she asks, her voice rising and anxious. Calling after my retreating back when she adds, “Don’t go to far—the doctor will call for you soon . . .”

I flee down the hall in search of an exit. Needing to fill my lungs with fresh air.

Needing to remember a time when my life consisted of something more than a never-ending series of mind-altering drugs and mental evaluations.

Needing to get far away from here.

I pick up the pace. Following the lighted signs with green arrows, I round the next corner, and plow smack into a girl so beautiful, so radiant and luminous, I can’t help but wonder if she’s one of the glowing people who stalk me.

If so, it’s just a matter of time before the place floods with crows. And once that happens, they’ll be shoving me into a straight jacket and a padded white room where I’ll live out my life.

“You okay?” The girl places a hand on each of my shoulders in an attempt to steady me. “I’m so sorry—I wasn’t even looking, and ...”

She tilts her head in a way that allows a stream of golden blond hair to spill down her side as her bright blue eyes narrow on mine. And though I try to pull away, try to tell her I’m perfectly fine, I’m far too startled by the jolt of her touch to do either one of those things.

It’s like her fingers are streaming with electricity that wraps all around me.

She grips my shoulders tighter and lowers her voice to a whisper. “Don’t let them tell you you’re crazy,” she says, glancing all around, as though afraid of being overheard. “Don’t let them tell you the glowing people don’t exist, because they do. The crows too. It’s all real, you’re not imagining any of it.”

I jerk back as though I’ve been shocked. Yanking free of her grip as my mind reels with questions.

Who the heck is she? And how could she possibly know about the visions? Has she read my case file? Is she some crazy escapee impersonating a staff member?

She smiles, standing steadily before me as she says, “I’m none of those things. My name’s Ever. Ever Bloom. I’m psychic, telepathic, but as far as I know I’m not crazy. Nor am I a patient impersonating a staff member. And though I’m probably the only person willing to believe you—trust me when I say, you won’t always feel so alone. There are plenty of us who realize the world isn’t anything like we’ve been trained to believe.”

“What are you doing here?” I ask, well aware how I just skipped over her more outrageous claims, only to focus on the benign.

“I’m taking part in a study on NDEs.” Fielding my blank look when she adds, “People who have had a near death experience.”

“You died?” My gaze flies down the length of her, thinking she is surely the strangest girl I’ve ever met, and yet there’s something about her that’s so calming, I have no desire to flee.

“More than once.” She lifts her shoulders, her eyes glinting with mischief when she says, “As will you.”

I shift from foot to foot, not really knowing how to respond.

“Listen,” she says, checking her watch and glancing toward the door just behind her. “All you need to know is that you’re not crazy. Not by a long shot. So please don’t believe them. Listen to your heart, it’ll never steer you wrong.”

I nod, sensing the truth behind her words.

“I wish we had more time to talk but—” She turns, smiling as the absolute personification of Tall, Dark, and Handsome pushes through the door and stands right beside her. “We’re late,” she says.

“That’s what happens when you won’t let me manifest a parking space.” He hands her an unopened bottle of water, grinning in a way so heart-melting, I have to force myself to look away.

Remembering too late how she claims to read minds, and the knowing smile she gives me, pretty much proves she just caught me mentally ogling her boyfriend.

“This is Damen. Damen Auguste,” she says, leaning against him and fitting into his side so easily, they’re like puzzle pieces—book ends—made to be together.

“I’m Daire,” I say, realizing I hadn’t gotten around to introducing myself earlier.

“Looks like your mom’s looking for you.” Damen gestures at a point just beyond my shoulder, where, sure enough, Jennika waits with a scowl on her face and a hand on each hip.

“Here.” Ever places her bottle of water into my hand. “Tell her you went to get something to drink. Don’t let her know you were about to run away. It’ll only make her mad, and that’s the last thing you need. Besides, you’re ready to face them now, right?”

I start to return the water, but it’s only a second later when a new one just appears in her hand. And I’m so busy blinking and gaping, I almost miss it when she says, “Remember what I told you: Believe what you see—what you know in your heart to be true—and discard everything else they try to tell you.”

I nod, taking one last look at Ever and Damen, hoping I can carry some of their optimism and magick with me wherever I go. About to make for Jennika now calling to me from her end of the hall, when Ever says, “You’re headed for great things, Daire Santos. You just have to believe in yourself.”

I stop, shoot her a quizzical look. About to tell her that my last name is Lyons, not Santos, when she smiles and nods and urges me on.

I hurry toward Jennika, allowing her to wrap an arm around me and lead me away as I cling to Ever’s assurance that the glowing people are real. The crows too. And the fact that I’m the only one who can see them doesn’t mean I’m insane, but rather that I’m headed for something extraordinary.
I can only hope that it’s true.

The End.

Book Review and Giveaway!- The Savage Grace

I just finished reading The Savage Grace by Bree Despain.

From Goodreads:

A troubled soul. An impossible choice. A final battle.

Wrestling with the werewolf curse pulsing deep inside of her, Grace Divine was finally able to find her brother, but it nearly cost her everything.

With her boyfriend, Daniel, stuck in wolf form and Sirhan's death approaching, time is running out for Grace to stop Caleb Kalbi and his gang of demons. If she fails, her family and hometown will perish. Everything rests on Grace's shoulders.

The final installment in The Dark Divine trilogy brings Daniel and Grace's love story to a breathtaking conclusion.

I always have such a hard time remembering what happened in previous books in a series.  And at first, I couldn't remember what had happened in The Dark Divine and The Lost Saint, but it soon came back to me and I fell right back into Grace's world.

I knew that this book was the last in the trilogy so I knew that everything would have to be wrapped up.  I just didn't know how.  And I have to say that I liked the way everything ended.  It stopped at a good place and I was happy with the ending.  I don't think there were any questions left unanswered, which I much appreciated!  (although I think there could be more with Talbot, things are okay with the way they were left.)

I still love Daniel and Grace together.  Their relationship is intense but innocent at the same time.  And I really liked the way that Jude was in this installment.  And the lost boys were so cute (and gotta love the Peter Pan connection!)

There were definitely some tears at the end.  But that's part of what made the book so enjoyable.  I love when books get the emotions going.  So while I will miss Grace and Daniel, it was a great ending to a fabulous series!  (Oh, and the cover is gorgeous once again!)

I gave this book a rating of 4/5.

The Teen Book Scene: Guest Blog and Giveaway!: Ivy Adams

I am honored to host Ivy Adams, author of The International Kissing Club, on my blog today as part of a Teen Book Scene Blog Tour.

I got to interview some of the characters from the book!

What is the most significant thing that has happened in your life so far?
Piper: Honestly, going to Paris and taking an art-blowing class. I've been drawing and painting since I knew what it meant to hold a pencil, but none of my art classes before ever came close to what it felt like to create glass in Paris. That class was the hardest I've ever taken, but it taught me what kind of art I want to create.
Mei: Getting adopted. For whatever reason my birth parents felt they had to give me up, I ended up with the best family I could have ever hoped for.

What is your most embarrassing moment?
Izzy: Oh, man, I have a lot of those... I going to go with the time I tried to kiss a boy to earn points for IKC, and the guy turned out to be only twelve. Twelve! Hey, all I can say in my defense is that he was really tall for twelve.

What is your best piece of advice for travelling abroad?
Cassidy: Always pack your toothbrush in your carry-on! You never know when fresh breath will be an absolute necessity, and your toothbrush is in your checked luggage. Ugh.

If you could have one wish, what would it be?
Piper: Besides to have that stupid Kiss the Pig video vanish from YouTube forever? I wish that my mother would see me, the real me, instead of the disappointment that she usually sees whenever she looks at me.
Mei: Full scholarship to MIT, of course.

Which person in your life has has the greastest impact on you and why?
Izzy: Probably my father, but keep in mind, his impact hasn't always been good. He's the football at the local high school and all he cares about is football. When I was younger, I drove myself crazy trying to win his approval. I'd never act that way now. Once I realized he was never going to get me, it gave me the freedom to stop caring what he thought.
Cassidy: My mom, hands down. She’s given up everything for me, and while I don’t want my life to be like hers, if I can grow up to be half as strong as she is, I’ll be doing okay. The Barlow women against the world!

Thank you for hosting us today!

Now tell me your best piece of travel advice in the comments (leave your email so we can contact you) to be entered to win the Around the World In 80 Kisses daily and weekly prize and also become eligible to win the Grand Prize, a Kindle Fire. The International Kissing Club by Ivy Adams is the story of four best friends: Piper, Cassidy, Mei, and Izzy--the misfits of Paris, Texas. Their whole lives, they’ve dreamed of escaping small-town life and seeing the world. So when Piper is the victim of an embarrassing prank that goes viral online, she gets the idea that the girls should escape via the school’s international exchange program, in search of fun, love and internet redemption.

Book Review and Giveaway- Entice

I am a bad blogger!  I was supposed to have this review posted on Wednesday!  Sorry!

I just finished reading Entice by Carrie Jones.

From Goodreads:
Zara and Nick are soul mates, meant to be together forever.

But that's not quite how things have worked out.

For starters, well, Nick is dead.

Supposedly, he's been taken to a mythic place for warriors known as Valhalla, so Zara and her friends might be able to get him back. But it's taking time, and meanwhile a group of evil pixies is devastating Bedford, with more teens going missing every day. An all-out war seems imminent, and the good guys need all the warriors they can find. But how to get to Valhalla?

And even if Zara and her friends discover the way, there's that other small problem: Zara's been pixie kissed. When she finds Nick, will he even want to go with her? Especially since she hasn't just turned...she's Astley's queen.

Okay, so I have to admit it.  I didn't really remember what happened in Need and Captivate.  And unfortunately, Entice didn't really give a lot of back story.  I started to remember a little as I read on, but not a lot.

And I remember that I liked Nick but I don't really remember why.  But I certainly know that I love Astley!  Oh man, can I have a pixie king like him (although he'd definitely have to be one of the good ones!)  And Zara is a great kick-butt female character.

This book was a little slow to start off, but then the action got going.  And the end definitely leaves you wanting more and wanting to know what is going to happen next! (And I'm totally Team Astley!)

I gave this book a rating of 3.5/5.

Guest Blog and Giveaway- Carol Snow

I am thrilled to have Carol Snow, author of Just Like Me, Only Better, as a guest blogger for me today!

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
My new novel, Just Like Me, Only Better, tells the story of Veronica Czaplicki, a single, cash-strapped suburban mother who lives a split life after being hired as celebrity double for a self-indulgent, imploding young starlet named Haley Rush. Picking the setting for the story was a no-brainer. Haley had to live around Hollywood, so I parked her in a big house in Beverly Hills. Veronica had to live within commuting distance of Beverly Hills, but in a town so normal it could be Anywhere, U.S.A. I put her in my backyard in Fullerton, California. (I mean this literally; I have a guest cottage, and I made it Veronica’s home.)

In addition to California, I have set my books in Maui, Scottsdale, and Boston. Coincidentally, I’ve lived in California, Scottsdale, and Boston. Sadly, I’ve never lived in Maui, but I’ve been there six times, the last visit an especially grueling research trip that involved downing countless mai tais in the name of authenticity. But here’s something odd: I’ve never even considered setting a book in northern New Jersey, where I grew up. And forget all your cracks about not wanting to spend research time there, because I’d take New Jersey over L.A. any day. (So don’t mess with me. I know people.)

Because my books are so location-specific, and because I make a big effort to capture the sounds, smells and feel of a place, I hear from a lot of readers who enjoy my details about, say, Massachusetts traffic, Arizona overdevelopment, or Maui swim-up bars. (Again, two words: grueling research.) So I was a little surprised, a few years ago, to receive an anonymous email message about my second book, Getting Warmer:

as someone who has lived in Phx/Scottsdale all of my 37 years and know other naitives - your depiction of naitives and the city is irritating.

I have never and neither have my friends or family ever worn cowboy boots - or any western attire.

The main type of house in the Valley are ranch houses - not Spanish or Territorial - and cookie cutter houses built by builders in the 1990s also do not qualify for this title.

I'm a little leary to continue reading as every time a reference is made to the area I get annoyed as it is so wrong.

They say to write about the things you know...I don't know how long you lived here, but it doesn't appear it was long enough to write about it.

The note stunned me, and not just because the writer didn’t know how to spell “natives” or create paragraphs. (Yes, it’s true: when put on the defensive, I find solace in grammar.) I had received so much feedback from Arizona readers saying that I had nailed the Valley of the Sun, my home for two years, perfectly. I didn’t pull the cowboy boot references from thin air; the western clothing store in my local strip mall did brisk business. And did she really say that most houses were ranch style and not Spanish? Really? Then why the housing developments look like fields of Taco Bells?

Last year I tried for the second time to set a book in Cape Cod, which just happens to be my favorite place in the world. I spent all of my childhood summers there; now my parents live there year-round, and I visit for most of August. But the weird thing was, I couldn’t nail it. In Maui, the air smelled like raindrops and hibiscus. In Cape Cod, the air smelled like … Cape Cod. In Arizona, the light was flat all day until dusk turned the sky pale blue and the mountains muddy purple. In Cape Cod, the sunset looked like … a sunset.

Finally, it hit me: sometimes you see things more clearly if you’re an outsider. Home is where the heart is. But your eyes and ears work better somewhere else.

Thank you so much for your post!

Author Interview and Giveaway- Bree Despain

Earlier this year I read The Dark Divine by Bree Despain and LOVED it.  It is definitely my favorite book so far this year!  Read my review here.  When I got my copy of The Dark Divine, I was also lucky enough to receive a bottle of nail polish that matches the purple color that is on the cover of the book.  And now I get to giveaway 3 bottles!

But first, I got to ask the lovely Bree Despain a couple of questions as part of the Dark Divine Blog Tour!

1.If you had to recommend one book to readers, what would it be?

Only one?! Oh man, that’s pressure. This sort of thing really depends on my mood. Today I’m going to say THE WAY HE LIVED by Emily Wing Smith, not only because it’s an excellent book (recently won the Utah Book Award and was a 2008 Lambda finalist) but also because it was written by a wonderful person. Emily is an author that I admire and aspire to be as good as—and she’s also an awesome friend.

2.What is your guilty pleasure, food-wise? (And if it's chocolate, be specific)

Well, there was a time when I would have said a Ghirardelli triple chocolate brownie and bowl of Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Therapy ice cream, but that was before I discovered that I have an intolerance to wheat, dairy, and eggs.

Every once in a while, I indulge in some chocolate ice cream (shhh…don’t tell my doctor) but I mostly get my guilty pleasures from dairy-wheat-free dark chocolate chips these days. I eat them while I write. Often with cinnamon bears.

However, when I finish my sequel, I am planning on eating one of those Ghirardelli brownies . . . even if it kills me.

3.Will there be a sequel to The Dark Divine, and what can you tell us about it?

Yes, there is a sequel to TDD. It’s called THE LOST SAINT, and it’s scheduled to be released on December 28th of this year!

I’m really not sure what I’m allowed to tell you about it at this point, but it’s definitely going explore some of the issues that came up at the end of TDD. We may, or may not, find out what happened to Jude. And there’s a couple of new characters headed to Rose Crest that are bringing a whole new set of complications with them—and one of them just happens to be pretty darn hot.

Please go to The Book Scout, http://thebookscout.blogspot.com/, tomorrow to see the next stop on The Dark Divine Blog Tour.

Thank you so much, Bree!

Guest Blog and Giveaway- Wendy Wax

I am so honored to have Wendy Wax, author of Magnolia Wednesdays, guest blog for me today.

My undergrad in college was broadcast journalism (although I went to grad school for early childhood education and am now a Kindergarten teacher) and I wondered how Wendy Wax went from broadcast journalism to becoming a fiction author!

Andrea asked how I went from broadcasting to writing novels and all I can say is, ‘I wish I knew.”

It seemed as if one minute I was filming interviews and doing stand ups; the next I was sitting at a computer while my babies napped and telling myself it was OK to make stuff up. It’s not easy to make that kind of switch. After years of checking facts and looking for corroboration, all of the sudden I could invent places and things and all kinds of people not to mention their motivations. It was pretty heady stuff.

I began the transition to writing fiction when I had a two year old and newborn to take care of. (I chalk this up to post pregnancy hormones, lack of sleep and ignorance-- I simply didn’t realize the magnitude of what I was undertaking!) The one thing I knew for sure was that I didn’t want to be off on location any more or working twelve hour days. “It’s flexible,” I told myself. “How hard can anything you can do in pajamas be?”

It hasn’t been all that easy of course, as you know if you read The Accidental Bestseller, but the pajama part remains a pretty nice perk. And I’ve discovered that although I changed fields, I didn’t quite let go of my journalism/broadcast training. In fact, a lot of it has come in quite handy.

For one thing, I understand the importance of research and have always dived into it at the start of each novel.

For 7 Days and 7 Nights, even though I had once worked in talk radio—my largest claim to fame was hosting a Friday night show called Desperate & Dateless in the eighties when I was both--I interviewed and observed a radio talk show host in action and asked him to read my manuscript to make sure I got things right. When it came time to enter the world of beauty pageants and the bra industry for Leave It to Cleavage—my favorite title ever—I found a neighbor who’d grown up in pageants and coached others and spent time talking with staff and touring a bra manufacturing company. Even the small fictional mountain town I created as the setting was based on a place I know well.

The same has been true for all my novels—the advertising business for Hostile Makeover, investigative journalism, police procedure, and ballroom dance for my current release, Magnolia Wednesdays. In some cases I’ve also used what I’ve personally experienced—youth baseball, suburban living, being a mother and wife, the constant battle to lose weight. But in almost every book there are vast unknowns that need to become known before you can make them real for your readers.

There are a lot of things that I’ve carried with me from my years in broadcasting and film that have helped me build a writing career. Writing for the spoken word and being a voice over and on camera talent has given me an ear for writing dialogue; writing copy and producing packages for air got me used to meeting deadlines and reinforced the importance of organization and working steadily on a project. I was also used to dealing with creativity as a profession—the rejection still hurts, but I’m constantly aware that publishing, like broadcasting, is a business. Our product is ourselves—our voice, our thoughts, our ability to communicate—but it has to be packaged in a way that can be sold. Broadcasting was a tough, competitive field, too. You had to be a self starter and you had to have perseverance. The hardest part of both fields is not to give up and never to surrender.

Like me, many writers come to writing later in life and from a variety of professions. I feel really fortunate to get to ‘make things up’ for a living. But it’s reassuring to have come from a background that makes me careful about what I know and what I make up.

Now I’d like to hear about Andrea’s transition. I don’t want to date myself too badly, but when I was in journalism school I don’t think the word ‘blog’ even existed.

You're not dating yourself.  When I was in journalism school, I had never heard of a blog either.  In fact, I don't think I had ever heard of them until a friend's wedding in 2006.  My blog is only a little over a year old--and I started it because I read so many books and I wanted to have a place to record my myself at times still writing like a journalist at first and have to go back and edit what I wrote--I was alwthoughts about them.  I had no idea I would meet so many great authors, publishers, publicists, and other bloggers!  I do  find ays taught to write facts for journalism, not opinions, so sometimes my reviews are more factual initially and I have to go back and make them more personal.

Thank you so much for your post!
