Challenge Completed- A to Z Reading Challenge

I have finished my fifth challenge!

A to Z Reading Challenge

Option B: Read titles A to Z. Commit to reading 26 books theoretically speaking. (since X and Z are hard to find, I will count the book if the letter is anywhere in the title)

Book Review- Queen of Babble

I just finished reading Queen of Babble by Meg Cabot.

From the back cover:

Lizzie Nichols has a problem: she can't keep anything to herself. And when she opens her big mouth on a trip to London, her good intentions get her long-distance beau, Andrew, in major hot water. Now she's stuck in England with no boyfriend and no place to stay until the departure date on her nonrefundable airline ticket. Fortunately, Lizzie's best friend and college roommate, Shari, is spending her summer catering weddings in a sixteenth-century château in southern France. Who cares if Lizzie's never traveled alone in her life and only speaks rudimentary French? She's off to Souillac to lend a helping hand!

One glimpse of gorgeous Château Mirac—and of gorgeous Luke, the son of the château's owner—and Lizzie's smitten. But thanks to her chronic inability to keep a secret, before the first cork has been popped Luke hates her, the bride is in tears, and Château Mirac is on the road to becoming a lipo-recovery spa. Add to that the arrival of ex-beau Andrew, who's looking for "closure" (or at least a loan), and everything—including Lizzie's shot at true love—is in la toilette . . . unless she can figure out some way to use her big mouth to save the day.

I have had this book in my TBR pile for a while and couldn't wait to get around to reading it, since I love reading Meg Cabot's blog and was hoping I would enjoy the book just as much.  But for the first half of the book, I was slightly disappointed.  I felt that Lizzie seemed like a complete airhead and I just couldn't get why she was so obsessed with Andrew.  But halfway through the book, when she and Andrew break up, it gets much better.  I liked her interactions with Luke and she became a stronger character.  And I really liked Luke--he seemed like the type of guy that I'd fall for (and probably every other girl too!) The scenery seems so beautiful--I want to visit place like Château Mirac!  I have the next book, Queen of Babble in the Big City, in my TBR pile and I can't wait until I have a chance to get around to reading it!

I gave this book a rating of 3.5/5.

Book Review- Never Been Witched

I just finished reading Never Been Witched by Annette Blair.

From the back cover:

Three's a charm, and the third Cartwright sister, Destiny, is certainly not lacking.  However, she is troubled by her attraction to paranormal debunker Morgan Jarvis.  Destiny opts out of a week in his company, hoping a meditative stay alone at her sister's lighthouse will shed some light on her contrary feelings and her psychic gifts.

Unbeknownst to Destiny, her sly sister also left keys with the unsuspecting Morgan.  Late one night, they literally stumble upon each other-- and the lighthouse's ghostly inhabitants.  Destiny and Morgan have nothing in common other than the one bed they need to share and some crazy physical attraction.  Raising the dead might be easier than trying to make these two opposites work together, but Destiiny has experience--and love--on her side...

I think this was the best book in the Triplet Witches Trilogy.  I think that the plot was the best of all three books, and I liked the characters the best too.  Once again, I don't have too much to say about this book. There were still some elements thrown in that I thought could have had more thought put into, but overall, I enjoyed this one.

I gave this book a rating of 3/5.

Book Review- Gone with the Witch

I just finished reading Gone with the Witch by Annette Blair.

From the back cover:

Beautiful bad girl Storm Cartwright can be charming when she wants to be.  So when she hears the sound of a baby crying every time she's near Aiden McCloud, she turns on the charm. Because she's sure the weeping means a child is in need--and that the handsome antiques restorer is the key to finding that helpless child.

From the start, Aiden is attracted to Storm.  Yet this gorgeous got girl won't stop talking baby nonsense.  Then Storm sets up a seductive trap, kidnapping him in his very own RV!  While Storm follows the sound of the cries, something magical starts happening between her and Aiden.  But can they keep the magic alive once Storm finally finds what she's looking for?

This is the second book in The Triplet Witch Trilogy.  I really wasn't too fond of the first book, Sex and the Psychic so I was hoping this one would be better.  And it was.  Not a lot better, but I enjoyed it more.  The writing didn't seem as annoying to me.  And I liked the characters in this story more.  But I still felt like elements of the plot were just thrown into the story.  I mean, these elements would have worked if more background had been built up.  I have the third book in the series, Never Been Witched, to read next and hopefully it will be the best of the three.

I gave this book a rating of 3/5.

Book Review- Hex Appeal

I just finished reading Hex Appeal by Linda Wisdom.

From the back cover:

Jazz and Nick's dream romance has turned into a nightmare...

Feisty witch Jasmine Tremaine and drop-deap gorgeous vampire cop Nikolai Gregorovich have a hot thing going, but it's tough to keep it together when nightmare visions turn their passion into bickering, and it's tearing them apart.

With a little help from their friends-- a motley bunch of ghosts with attitude, rule-breaking witches, supernatural hotties and sinister elves-- Jazz and Nick are in a race against time to uncover whoever it is that's poisoning their dreams, and their relationship...

This was a second fun installment in the Hex series by Linda Wisdom. Jazz is back with a new storyline and the same, great humor. I love the spells and curses that Jazz comes up with. The wording is hilarious--"because I say so, damn it!"

I love the other cast of characters that are back, as well! The hot vampire Nick is back, along with the ghost Irma and her dog, and the human Krebs.

The only thing I didn't really like was the ending. Jazz had been having nightmares that seemed all too real, and the way that figured out how to get rid of them just seemed sort of, trippy, for a lack of better word. I think it was resolved too quickly for my liking. But I am looking forward to the next book in the series, Wicked By Any Other Name, and the fourth book in the series just came out--Hex in High Heels.

I gave this book a rating of 4/5.

Book Review- Very Valentine

I just finished reading Very Valentine by Adriana Trigiani.

From the inside cover:

Meet the Roncalli and Angelini families, a vibrant cast of colorful characters who navigate tricky family dynamics with hilarity and brio, from magical Manhattan to the picturesque hills of bella Italia. Very Valentine is the first novel in a trilogy that is sure to be the new favorite of Trigiani's millions of fans around the world.

In this luscious, contemporary family saga, the Angelini Shoe Company, makers of exquisite wedding shoes since 1903, is one of the last family-owned businesses in the Greenwich Village. The company is on the verge of financial collapse. It falls to thirty-three-year-old Valentine Roncalli, the talented and determined apprentice to her grandmother, the master artisan Teodora Angelini, to bring the family's old-world craftmanship into the twenty-first century and save the company from ruin.

While juggling a budding romance with dashing chef Roman Falconi, her duty to her family, and a design challenge presented by a prestigious department store, Valentine returns to Italy with her grandmother to learn new techniques and seek one-of-a-kind materials for building a pair of glorious shoes to beat their rivals. There, in Tuscany, Naples, and on the Isle of Capri, a family secret is revealed as Valentine discovers her artistic voice and much more, turning her life and the family business upside down in ways she never expected. Very Valentine is a sumptuous treat, a journey of dreams fullfilled, a celebration of love and loss filled with Trigiani's trademark heart and humor.

This book was just okay for me. I felt that there were too many descriptions. Yes, it's nice to know what Italy looks like, but I don't need to know what every single person is wearing or what everything smells like. That's just me though.

As for the characters, sometimes I like Valentine and felt warmth from her and other times I didn't get her at all. The same went for Roman. There were times when I liked him and wanted them to make it work, but there were other times where I didn't like him and felt like he should have put more energy into their relationship. I did really like the character of Gram. I loved that an eighty-year old women could fall in love.

Overall, I had to put focus into reading this book, it didn't just fly by for me. I'm not saying that it's not good--it is. I'm just not one that likes so much detail.

I gave this book a rating of 3/5.

Book Review- Playing With Fire

I just finished reading Playing With Fire by Katie MacAlister.

From the back cover:

Gabriel Tauhou, the leader of the silver dragos, can't take his eyes off May Northcott--not even when May, who has the unique talent of being able to hide in the shadows, has slipped from everyone else's sight.

May, however has little time for Gabriel--not when she's hiding from the Otherworld law, hunting down a blackmailer, and trying to avoid a demon lord's demands. But her ability to withstand Gabriel's fire marks her as his mate, and he has no intention of letting her disappear into the darkness she seems to prefer.

Then May is ordered to steal one of Gabriel's treasures--an immensely important relic of all dragonkin--and he must decide which to protect: his love or his dragons.

This is the first book by Katie MacAlister that I have read (although I own most of them). This is the first of the Silver Dragons series. I had a really hard time getting into it at first. Although I have read several other paranormal series, this book had a lot of terminology in it that I didn't understand. At first I tried to just guess what the words meant, but it got too confusing so I had to look them up. It was really slow-going at first. But then the more I read, the more I got into it. I enjoyed the humor and the romance. I want that kind of passion! I look forward to reading the next book in the series, Up in Smoke.

I gave this book a rating of 3/5.

Book Review- In Over Her Head

I just finished reading In Over Her Head by Judi Fennell.

From the back cover:

Reel Tritone is the rebellious royal second son of the ruler of a vast undersea kingdom. A Merman born with legs instead of a tail, he's always been fascinated by humans, especially one young woman he once saw swimming near his family's reef...

Ever since the day she swam out too far and heard voices in the water, marina owner Erica Peck won't go swimming for anything-- until she's forced into the water by a shady ex-boyfriend searching for stolen diamonds and is nearly eaten by a shark. Luckily Reel is nearby to save her, and he discovers she's the woman he's been searching for...

Before she knows it, Erica is off with Reel on a series of wild underwater adventures to retriece stolen treasure, battle the mother of all sea monsters, and defy a death edict from the kingdom's high council. But even if they get out of their madcap mission alive, how will they find a way to stay together when she hates the water and he can't survive on land?

I loved reading this book! I love Disney and especially the little mermaid, and this book reminded me a lot of the story. The way Judi Fennell described the scenery of the ocean made me want to be able to breathe underwater (seeing as I'm too scared of whats in it to go scuba diving!) The book had some neat twists in it, right up to the end. I loved the humor in the story and the way that everyday sayings were adapted to the ocean (instead of saying things like "Oh my God", he would say "Hades" or "For Apollo's sake" and he said "Catfish got your tongue?"). It was just a great, imaginative story.

There will be two more books in this series, Wild Blue Under (November 2009) and Catch of a Lifetime (February 2010) and I absolutely can't wait to read them!

I gave this book a 4/5.

Book Review- Wait Till Your Vampire Gets Home

I just finished reading Wait Till Your Vampire Gets Home by Michele Bardsley.

From the back cover:

It's only because of my work as a paranormal investigator that I, Libby Monroe, end up in a town like Broken Heart, Oklahoma, chasing down bizarre rumors of strange goings-on--and finding vampires, lycanthropes, and zombies. Oh, my!

I never expected to fall in lust, but sexy vampire Ralph Genessa is too irresistible. The fact that he's the loving father of twin boys drives the nail into my coffin and wins my undying love. And you know what they say: Home is where the heart is. Only this town is being torn in two by a war between the undead, and I may be the only thing that can hold Broken Heart together.

This is the 4th book in the series. I'm not sure if its because I read the last book last August, or what, but I had a hard time reading this book. I normally can remember all of the characters in series, but I jusst could not remember anything about the characters in this one. And there wasn't a lot of details reminding you who each character was. Because of this, I just didn't enjoy it as much. And maybe that was my fault. I liked the humor, and the romance (I would love a Ralph of my own!) I just spent a lot of time trying to remember who each character was. I look forward to reading the next one, Over My Dead Body, soon!

I gave this book a 3/5.

Book Review- Knit Two

I just finished reading Knit Two by Kate Jacobs.

From the inside flap:

The sequel to the number-one "New York Times" bestseller "The Friday Night Knitting Club, KNIT TWO" returns to Walker and Daughter, the Manhattan knitting store founded by Georgia Walker and her young daughter, Dakota. Dakota is now an eighteen-year-old freshman at NYU, running the little yarn shop part-time with help from the members of the Friday Night Knitting Club.

Drawn together by the sense of family the club has created, the knitters rely on one another as they struggle with new challenges: for Catherine, finding love after divorce; for Darwin, the hope for a family; for Lucie, being both a single mom and a caregiver for her elderly mother; and for seventysomething Anita, a proposal of marriage from her sweetheart, Marty, that provokes the objections of her grown children.

As the club's projects--an afghan, baby booties, a wedding coat--are pieced together, so is their understanding of the patterns underlying the stresses and joys of being mother, wife, daughter, and friend. Because it isn't the difficulty of the garment that makes you a great knitter: it's the care and attention you bring to the craft--as well as how you adapt to surprises.

I was a little worried before I started reading this book because I hadn't read such great reviews about it. But I enjoyed it. I enjoyed The Friday Night Knitting Club more, but I still liked this book. I liked seeing how the characters had changed and grown. There was also a surprise (actually 2 of them) at the end that I didn't see coming. And this time they didn't make me cry!

I gave this book a rating of 3/5.

Book Review- Excuse Me, Your Soul Mate Is Waiting

Last night I finished reading Excuse Me, Your Soul Mate Is Waiting by Marla Martenson.

From the back cover:

Each of us yearns for that one true love--our own soul mate. Now the search has become much easier with the help of Excuse Me, Your Soul Mate Is Waiting. Marla Martenson has combined her talent and wisdom with the sure-fire techniques of the Law of Attraction to help you bring that special love into your life.

There are just four simple and easy steps to follow--
1. Name what you DON'T want to happen.
2. Name what you DO want to happen.
3. Feel what you want.
4. Allow it to happen.

This is a fun, concrete, and practical approach to finding Mr. or Ms. Right. Using the best-selling guide, Excuse Me, Your Life Is Waiting, as her "bible", Marla challenges her readers to stop being victims and take control of their lives. This joyful book empowers you to find your true heart's desires.

Ok, I'm not sure, but I just didn't buy into this book. I get being upbeat and positive, but I think this just took it too far (or maybe I'm just too cynical). The author talks a lot about thinking positive things which gives off vibrations at high frequency (and vice-versa) and when people are vibrating at a high frequency, they can pull their desires into their lives. I just don't see that working. I do think its a good idea to identify what you do want in a relationship though, and I agree with the book that you shouldn't stay in a relationship just because its comfortable. Luckily, right now I don't need to put this book into practice, but maybe if I have the unfortunate need to one day, I will try it out.

I gave this book a rating of 2/5.
