Musing Mondays- May 11, 2009

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about boys and reading…
Have you ever finished a book, then turned around and immediately re-read it? Why? What book(s)? (question courtesy of MizB)

Nope! I never re-read books! There are waaaay too many brand-new (to me) books out there for me to read that I don't want to spend the time reading something that I've already read!

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about your tbr pile…
How many books (roughly) are in your tbr pile? Is this in increasing number or does it stay stable? Do you ever experience tbr anxiety in the face of this pile? (question courtesy of Wendy)

As of right now I have about 534 books! Oh boy! And it keeps increasing. Yes, I face anxiety all the time! For example "Oh no, I have run out of space on my 4th bookcase...I don't have room for any more!" or "When am I ever REALLY gonna read all of these books??"

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about 2009 favourites…
Coming towards the end of April, we’re a third of the way through the way through the year. What’s the favourite book you’ve read so far in 2009? What about your least favourite? (question courtesy of MizB)

My favorite so far is one in my favorite series, Undead and Unworthy by MaryJanice Davidson. I always enjoy reading her stories!

My least favorite so far was a book that I did for a review. It was too short, there weren't enough details and the character deveolpment was poor. It was The Soul Collectors by Charles Quince.

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about blog comments
How do you respond to the comments on your blog? Do you try to email individually or comment on post yourself answering the comments above? What do you think is the best way to respond to comments and do you respond to all of them? Do you feel slighted if you don't receive a response back from the blog owner? (question courtesy of Jenn)

Well, maybe this is bad, but I only respond to comments that are questions or that I have something to add back. If I do respond, I hit reply in my email and just respond individually. And I don't feel slighted if I don't hear back. Maybe if I asked a question, I might feel a little offended if the blog owner didn't answer, but I usually forget that I posted a comment in the first place!

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about your to be read list…
As a follow up to last week's question, Joseph asked how you keep track of your tbr list. Do you have a paper list or on your computer? Do you take it with you when you go shopping? How do you decide what gets added to it?

I have it all typed up on my computer in alphabetical order. I can't take it to the store with me, which it makes it difficult, but I only really buy books in stores if I go in knowing what I want. And I just add every book that I get onto the list (once I've read a book, I take the title off that list and add it to my "Books I've Read" list).

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about recording your reading…Do you keep track of what and/or how many books you read? How long have you been doing this? What's your favorite tracking method, and why?If you don't keep track, why not? (question courtesy of MizB)

I started tracking back at the beginning of 2008. First I have a microsoft word list of all the books I have in ABC order by title...then I have a list of the books I have read, again in ABC order by title. Then I have a chart that is numbered...it has the title, the author, the number of pages, the dates I start and finish the book, and the rating I give it. I also keep track on Shelfari, and am starting to update on Goodreads and LibraryThing

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about talking to strangers…
We were all warned as children to 'never talk to strangers', but how do you feel about book-talk with random people? When you see people reading, do you ask what it is? Do you talk to people in the book store or the library? Why or why not? What do you do if people talk to you?

I don't normally talk to random strangers about what they are reading unless I am feeling very brave. I'm just too shy! But if people come up to me to talk about what I'm reading, I'll all for it!

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about new authors…
What is your policy when it comes to new authors? Do you feel comfortable purchasing a book or do you prefer to borrow new authors from the library? How often do you 'try out' a new author?

I don't really buy too many books anymore. The books I do buy, I tend to buy authors I have already read. I usually trade books on one of the trading sites, and there I have several friends who I trust to recommend good, new authors that I will try out.

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about boys and reading…
When reading do you read every word? Do you ever skip chapters or skim over parts? (question curtesy of Wendy)

I intend to read every word but sometimes I'll find myself thinking "huh?" and realize that I skipped a paragraph a couple back. But I don't ever skip chapters or skim over parts. I make myself read every page of a book! (where does the boys part of this question come in?)

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about the library…
How often do you visit the library? Do you have a scheduled library day/time, or do you go whenever? Do you go alone, or take people with you?

Actually, I don't go to the library anymore! I use several trade sites (TitleTrader, BookMooch, PaperbackSwap, and Frugal Reader) so in the last 2 years my TBR has become over 400 books! I used to go all of the time, whenever I was done with the stack of my books!

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about book reviews…
Do you read any non-blogging book reviews? If so, where (newspaper, library etc)? Do you have any favourites sources you'd like to share?

The only reviews I read that aren't in a blog are from my friends over at FrugalReader.com. I know which ones I have similar tastes to so I pay attention to those reviews. Otherwise, I like to make my own judgments :)

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about bookmarks…What do you use to mark your place while reading? Do you have a definite preference? Do you use bookmarks, paper, or (gasp) turn down the pages? If you use bookmarks, do you have a favourite one?

I prefer to use bookmarks. I don't really have a favorite one and if I'm on vacation and get a new book or lose my other one, I'll just grab a piece of paper from somewhere. I have an envelope full of bookmarks that I've randomly collected from places so I can just grab from there when I loose one. I know that I don't like the metal ones with the pretty things on top. They are too bulky--I like flat ones. And I definitely don't turn the pages down!

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about book stores…
How do you choose what do buy from your local bookstore? Do you have a list, or just browse? What is the selection in your book store like? Do you find what you're looking for? Do you feel pressured to buy the kind of books the store makes prominent? (question courtesy of MizB)

Honestly, I don't buy that many books from bookstores anymore. I trade them at book sites (I belong to Frugal Reader, Paperback Swap, TitleTrader, Book Mooch). But if I do buy something, its for a reason and I know going in what book I am going to buy. The closest book store to me is Barnes and Noble and they have a large selection. I also buy at Target sometimes.

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about lending books...
A few weeks back we had a question about borrowing books, this week I was wondering what your policy was on lending books. Do you lend books to anyone? Just friends? Only big readers? How long are they allowed to have them?

I guess I don't really have a "policy". My friends call my bookshelves my "library". I don't mind them borrowing books, as long as I get them back. And if I hear my friends saying that they want to read a particular book, and I have it on my shelves, I'll offer it up to borrow. Right now I have two books out: one to my brother's sister who took in on a cruise to read (she said she'll mail it back and hopefully she will) and another to a girl on my softball team (she's had it for several months). I always feel bad asking for them back, but I think in this last case, I'm going to have to.

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about reading while sick…
How does your being sick (or injured) affect your reading? Do you read more? Less? Do you pick out a different book than you had already planned? Do you have a "comfort book" that makes you feel better?

Well, it depends on how sick I am. If I'm just sniffly with a cold, then I read more. I tell myself that since I'm sick, I deserve to just lay around and do nothing but read! If I'm really not feeling well at all, then I tend to sleep more, so I get less reading done. And since I read a bunch of books for the book rings on a book trading site, I tend to stick to the book that I am currently reading, or planned to read next.

Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about assigned reading…
How did you react to assigned reading when you were in school/university/college/etc? How do you think on these books now? What book were you 'forced' to read when you where in school that you've since reread and loved?
I honestly don't remember much assigned reading. I mean, I know there must have been. All I remember reading is Last of the Mohicans in 8th grade and briefly recall reading a Charles Dickens book, Julius Caesar, and Romeo and Juliet. I know there must have been more, but I just don't remember them. But I'm pretty sure I haven't re-read any books that I read in school. Wow--I am so insighful this week--haha!
