Weekly Geeks- April 11, 2009

What shall we cook today? It seems that for most of us, a bit of our book obsession would carry over to the cookbook genre, so this week for Weekly Geeks, let's talk cookbooks! Here are some ideas to get you started:

--Describe your cookbook collection. How many cookbooks do you own? A lot? Just a few? None at all?

--Do you even buy cookbooks? Or do you gather family cookbook compilations and/or recipe files instead?

--Do you like to collect certain types of cookbooks? Say, from certain chefs? From places you visit? From a particular food group or style?

--When buying cookbooks, what do you look for? Does it need to have pictures? Spiral binding? A specific type of font?

--What is your favorite cookbook? Tell us the story behind it.

--Tell us about your most well-used cookbook. Is it different from your favorite cookbook? Or are they one and the same?

--Take a picture of your collection. How and where do you organize it?

--Share a recipe from one of your favorite cookbooks. Include a picture if you can.

I am just starting to get into the whole cooking thing, so I only have a couple of cookbooks and I don't have a lot to write about here. I like cookbooks that have pictures but its not neccessary. I would love to find a cookbook that has recipes that include side items to cook along with the entrees (I am having a hard time coming up with side items every night). If you know of one like this, please let me know!!

Weekly Geeks- April 4, 2009

April 2nd was International Children's Book Day. And April is National Poetry Month. In celebration, I have two lovely options for you this week:

Option A: Be a kid!

You could read a picture book (or two or three) and share what you read.

Write up a post sharing your favorite books from childhood

Write up a post about reading together with your child(ren)

I teach Kindergarten so I read a BUNCH of kids books! One of my favorite themes is the gingerbread man theme. First, we have a gingerbread man hunt at the beginning of the year to find the gingerbread man. This gets the kids familiar with the school and then at the end they get to eat the cookies. Then we send a letter out to all of the parents. We have them then forward that letter to family and friends around the world. Their job is to send our class postcards either saying that they "saw" the gingerbread man or pretending to be the gingerbread man. This is the first year I have done this and the kids LOVE it! They are so tickled when the postcard is to them and we have gotten them from all over the world.

We also read a bunch of different adaptations of the gingerbread man, starting with the one in our reading books. Here are some others that we read:

Weekly Geeks- March 7, 2009

One of my favorite Weekly Geeks last year was: A Quote a Day. This will have you pulling books off your shelves and Googling for your favorites. It also means a post a day for the next week - or as many as you can do. Quoth Dewey:

Judge a Book By Its Cover!This week it's all about judging books by their covers! Pick a book--any book, really--and search out multiple book cover images for that book. They could span a decade or two (or more)...Or they could span several countries. Which cover is your favorite? Which one is your least favorite? Which one best 'captures' what the book is about?

I llooked for Confessions of a Shopahloic by Sophie Kinsella. I like the covers that have bags on them. It shows what the book is about! The ones that show the side of a dress, or of girls' legs I don't like because it really doesn't show what the book is about.

Weekly Geeks- January 31, 2009

What are you passionate about besides reading and blogging? For example, are you crafty (knitting, woodworking, scrapbooking, model building)? Do you cook? Into gaming (computer or board)? Sports (player or spectator)? Photography? Maybe you like geocaching, rock climbing? Or love attending events like renaissance fairs, concerts? Music? Dancing? You get the idea.
Tell us why you're passionate about it. Post photos of what you've made or of yourself doing whatever it is you love doing.








I am a die-hard Florida Gators fan! When I was in school there, I went to every home football and basketball game. Since I've graduated, I've gone to at least one game of each sport every year. When the Gators went to the National Championship in '06, my best friend and I flew out to Phoenix but the tickets were way more than we expected so we couldn't go. This year, we bought National Championship tickets early on, just in case, and sure enough, we got to go! It was one of the most fun days of my life, and we are planning on going to Pasadena next year if the Gators go to the championship again!

Also, if anyone's familiar with blogspot, I'm having a hard time with the pictures. Everytime I try to put a picture on here, it automatically goes to the top and then I have to move it and it messes up the whole post. Any tricks for this?
