Book Review- Night's Edge

I just finished reading Night's Edge by Maggie Shayne, Charlaine Harris, and Barbara Hambly.

From Goodreads:

"Dancers in the Dark" by "New York Times "bestselling author Charlaine HarrisDancer Layla Rue Le May's childhood prepared her to handle just about anything, including her aloof partner, Sean McClendon, a three-hundred-year-old redheaded vampire. Even so, when she somehow acquires a stalker, Layla Rue is surprised to find that Sean is the only one she can trust....

"Her Best Enemy" by" USA TODAY "bestselling author Maggie Shayne

Kiley Brigham refuses to believe there's a ghost in her house, but when an unseen hand leaves a bloody message on her bathroom mirror, she's forced to turn to local psychic Jack McCain. As the two work to uncover a long-buried secret, Kiley finds that she's haunted not by spirits, but by thoughts of Jack....

"Someone Else's Shadow "by Locus Award-winning author Barbara Hambly

Maddie Laveau worries about her young roommate, Tessa, when she stays late to practice ballet in the old Glendower Building...and when Tessa goes missing, Maddie enlists mysterious tenant Phil Anderson to help. But is Phil the white knight she needs, or the predator she fears?

I enjoyed all three of these stories.  I initially read it because I wanted to read any books that was related to the Sookie Stackhouse series, which "Dancers in the Dark" was.  But honestly, I don't even remember how they were related.  I do remember really enjoying all the talk about the dancing, which I also enjoyed in "Someone Else's Shadow". I always find it hard to write reviews about anthologies so I'll just leave it with: this was a good one.

I gave this book a rating of 3.5/5.

Book Review- Bite

I just finished reading Bite by Laurel K. Hamilton, Charlaine Harris, MaryJanice Davidson, Angela Knight, and Vickie Taylor.

From Goodreads:

Feel the Touch of Darkness. . .

Follow a vampire who can be as deadly as her prey. Meet a down home southern girl who's found out, much to her chagrin, that vampires are her type. Feel the euphoria of fear in the shadow of a reluctant Queen of the Undead. Step closer to the hot-blooded edge of passion as a strange new mythology of the night is unveiled.

The bite is back in vampire fiction as today's most provocative authors of vampire fiction cast their irresistible spells on you . . .

The brightest and hottest authors—including New York Times best-selling authors Laurell K. Hamilton and Charlaine Harris—tell all-new tales featuring their best known and loved characters.

* From Laurell K. Hamilton, a never-before-published Anita Blake story in which Anita, temporarily separated from her vampire lover Jean-Claude, must go to him for help on a case. Where she finds herself once more falling under his erotic spell...

* A brand-new, Southern Vampire story by Charlaine Harris features Sookie Stackhouse and the vampires who have come to define her romantic life, and have ended her hope of a normal one...

* Newly crowned Vampire Queen Betsy Taylor reluctantly assumes her royal duties in MaryJanice Davidson's brand-new novella.

* Introduced in the anthology Hot Blooded and the romance Master of the Night, Angela Knight has created a fascinating universe melding Arthurian lore with erotic vampirism...

* Finally, in the romantic novella "Blood Lust", popular romance
author Vickie Taylor brings her own unique spin on vampires...

This is going to be a short review because it's always hard for to write about anthologies.  It's hard for me to go deeper into short stories.

I've only ever read books by Charlaine Harris and MaryJanice Davidson before.  So while the other short stories were interesting and fun, I wasn't completely into their world.  I enjoyed reading MaryJanice Davidson's story.  It took me a couple of pages to get where Queen Betsy came into play.  But I so love her.  She's the first paranormal character that I loved and got me into my paranormal phase.  As for Charlaine Harris's story...it was interesting to read more about Sookie's cousin Hadley.  I got a little bit more of a back story than we got in the novel.

Overall, fun stories to read!

I gave this book a rating of 3/5.

Book Review- Dead Reckoning

I just finished reading Dead Reckoning by Charlaine Harris.

From Goodreads:

With her knack for being in trouble's way, Sookie witnesses the firebombing of Merlotte's, the bar where she works. Since Sam Merlotte is now known to be two-natured, suspicion falls immediately on the anti-shifters in the area. Sookie suspects otherwise, but her attention is divided when she realizes that her lover Eric Northman and his "child" Pam are plotting to kill the vampire who is now their master. Gradually, Sookie is drawn into the plot-which is much more complicated than she knows...

Wow.  Talk about blood and gore.  I think this was by far the most violent and gory book of the series.  Yuck.  It was almost too much violence for me to really enjoy it.

That being said, there some definite twists and turns in this book.  And I'm not really sure what to think of Sookie and Eric's relationhip now.  I'm not sure if this new turn of events is a good thing or a bad thing.

And we learn more about Sookie's family line and how her "gift" came to be.  I think all of the involvement of her grandma in the past kind of surprised me.

Anyways, since this is such a long series, most of the books run together and are similar so I don't really have too much to say!

I gave this book a rating of 3/5.

Book Review- Dead in the Family

I finished reading Dead in the Family by Charlaine Harris today.

From Goodreads:

After enduring torture and the loss of loved ones during the brief but deadly Faery War, Sookie Stackhouse is hurt and she's angry. Just about the only bright spot in her life is the love she thinks she feels for vampire Eric Northman. But he's under scrutiny by the new Vampire King because of their relationship. And as the political implications of the Shifters coming out are beginning to be felt, Sookie's connection to the Shreveport pack draws her into the debate. Worst of all, though the door to Faery has been closed, there are still some Fae on the human side-and one of them is angry at Sookie. Very, very angry...

Part of this book was...disturbing I guess is the word.  There's a new character in this book.  Alexei.  Who was part of the Russian royal family and was killed when he was 13.  So while he was doing all of his vampire acts in the book, in  my head I was seeing this thirteen year old kid and it bothered me.

And this book seemed so much sadder than the ones before.  There is a lot of death and gore, of course, but there doesn't seem to be anything happy or hopeful in the book.

And I wanted more Sookie/Eric action.  Eric isn't present all that much in the book, at least not in a romantic way.

I did like Sookie's relationship development with her cousin, Hunter, who has the same ability that she does.  I thought it brought out the softer side of Sookie, and I liked it.

I'm going to pick up the next book in the series, Dead Reckoning, tomorrow so we'll se where that book leads us!

I gave this book a rating of 3/5.
