I am so honored and excited to have Linda Wisdom, author of Hex in High Heels guest blogging for me today!
A Writer’s Journey
Writing has always been a love for me and romance writing was a great fit when I started out. Plus I was honing my craft with each book.
At the time I was one of those cocky ones who read a few Harlequin Presents and said “I can write one of these.” My husband said, “then do it.” Could I ignore that kind of dare? No way!
We’re talking the Dark Ages. I wrote my first book on an IBM Executive typewriter, which used proportional spacing. The minute I finished that book, another idea came to mind and I wrote that one too. Then the question came “I wrote the books, now it’s time to do something with them.” Not easy when there was no Romance Writers of America and I didn’t know any other writers. But luckily, a brand spanking new publisher, Silhouette Books, was looking for new authors. I sent the manuscripts to them in November and wow, they sold in December on my wedding anniversary. I was a published author!
But I wasn’t about to stop there. I wrote another book before any of the Silhouette books hit the shelves. I was also fired from my job because of my writing, so it was time to sink or swim. Being a stubborn person I was determined to fulfill my lifelong dream of being a writer.
And I did! Thirty years and close to eighty books later I’m still writing and still loving it. Yes, there are days when I ask myself why. Days when my characters won’t behave or the story isn’t going the path I wish. Usually because my idea of direction isn’t the same way my characters want to go. Perils of not doing what they say.
And along the way I’ve written in a lot of sub-genres. Dramatic romance, humorous romance, romantic suspense, one action adventure romance, and paranormal. I finally took my favorites and meshed the humor and paranormal together. For me, it was a perfect fit. I could use my love for the odd and magickal and put them together. I could create witches with attitude, yet ones you’d want to hang out with. Sexy heroes with that extra something and critters you wouldn’t find in your local pet store unless that pet store offered up a lot of magick to go with them. Or fuzzy bunny slippers with fangs and gargoyles that love to get into mischief.
Every author wants to know their books are read. I want more than that. I want my readers to read and enjoy them. To lose themselves in another world where anything can happen and where they can forget about any troubles they might have.
Of course, whether I accomplished that is up to my readers. But you have to say that man-eating bunny slippers can’t help but bring a smile to your face.
Like the previous three books in my Hex series, Hex in High Heels is filled with fun, crazy/fun creatures and a sassy witch who’s hot for the local Were Border collie. Not to mention elves you don’t find working for Santa.
Let’s hear it for the fun books. I know I love reading them. So what about you? Do you prefer dark and edgy or the funnier romances?
Linda
