I finished reading Furious by Jill Wolfson today on the plane back from Denver for an Around the World ARC Tour.
From Goodreads:
Three high school girls become the avenging Furies of Greek legend.
We were only three angry girls, to begin with. Alix, the hot-tempered surfer chick; Stephanie, the tree-hugging activist; and me, Meg, the quiet foster kid, the one who never quite fit in. We hardly knew each other, but each of us nurtured a burning anger: at the jerks in our class, at our disappointing parents, at the whole flawed, unjust world.
We were only three angry girls, simmering uselessly in our ocean-side California town, until one day a mysterious, beautiful classmate named Ambrosia taught us what else we could be: Powerful. Deadly. Furious.
I've always loved Greek mythology and even took a couple of classes in college on the topic. So this story intersted me right away. Unfortunately, the writing did it in.
The writing was almost--crude. I'm not sure if that's the word but there were things that could have been left out of the story. And there seemed to a pretty big focus on the chest area (for example "the Double D twins". Really?)
The actual storyline was okay. I think I could have gotten more into it if the writing didn't put me off. The characters were interesting enough in themselves and I wanted to feel sorry that they were outcasts, but I just didn't.
It wasn't a horrible book, it just didn't do anything for me.
I gave this book a rating of 3/5.

Book Review- The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight
I finished reading The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith on the plane to Denver on Friday.
From Goodreads:
Who would have guessed that four minutes could change everything?
Today should be one of the worst days of seventeen-year-old Hadley Sullivan's life. Having missed her flight, she's stuck at JFK airport and late to her father's second wedding, which is taking place in London and involves a soon-to-be stepmother Hadley's never even met. Then she meets the perfect boy in the airport's cramped waiting area. His name is Oliver, he's British, and he's sitting in her row.
A long night on the plane passes in the blink of an eye, and Hadley and Oliver lose track of each other in the airport chaos upon arrival. Can fate intervene to bring them together once more?
Quirks of timing play out in this romantic and cinematic novel about family connections, second chances, and first loves. Set over a twenty-four-hour-period, Hadley and Oliver's story will make you believe that true love finds you when you're least expecting it.
What a sweet book! I am such a sucker for a good love story and this one definitely fit the bill.
I really liked both Hadley and Oliver. And I liked them together. He helped to lighten her up. Normally I would scorn at the idea of falling so deeply for someone in such a short period of time (I like love stories, but they have to be realistic) but this one just fit. It worked.
As for what I think was supposed to be a shock, I realized it right away. But it didn't take away from my enjoyment of the story.
And I have to say that it was refreshing to read a book where everyone was nice. The step-mother wasn't evil and the other bridesmaids weren't catty.
Overall, a great story! I can't wait to read Jennifer E. Smith's next book, This Is What Happy Looks Like!
I gave this book a rating of 4/5.

The Boston Marathon bombings last Monday broke my heart. I am big into running (see my other blog, Once Upon a Run or my running Facebook page.) So to hear of these tragedies was horrifying. Obviously for those injured or killed. But also for those who have trained for so long to qualify for this race only to be stopped before they could finish. Or for those who did finish, this race will forever be tainted.

Invisible Girl by Mary Hanlon Stone
