Only 2 more weeks of Summer Break.  Boo!  I got an interesting email from Goodreads.  It said that I was in the top 1% of reviewers on the website!  Really?  Way to make a blogger feel good and make their day! :)

Speaking of which--all of a sudden, Goodreads isn't working on Internet Explorer, which is what I use.  Is anyone else having this problem?

Oh, and I'm having a Moving Sale.  Check it out here

I finished and reviewed the following books last week:
Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass #2) by Sarah J. Maas

Book Review- Crown of Midnight

I just finished reading Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass #2) by Sarah J. Maas.

From Goodreads:

An assassin’s loyalties are always in doubt.
But her heart never wavers.

After a year of hard labor in the Salt Mines of Endovier, eighteen-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien has won the king's contest to become the new royal assassin. Yet Celaena is far from loyal to the crown – a secret she hides from even her most intimate confidantes.

Keeping up the deadly charade—while pretending to do the king's bidding—will test her in frightening new ways, especially when she's given a task that could jeopardize everything she's come to care for. And there are far more dangerous forces gathering on the horizon -- forces that threaten to destroy her entire world, and will surely force Celaena to make a choice.

Where do the assassin’s loyalties lie, and who is she most willing to fight for?

Lots and lots of action in this book.  Even more of a love triangle than in the last book.  And some twists and turns.

I still liked Calaena for the most part.  There were some times when she was violent that turned me off her, but I think it was supposed to be like that.  But she still had a good heart.  As for the boys, I think I like Dorian more, by just a little bit.

Something big is revealed at the end.  I didn't see it coming at all.  It was a good twist and I can't wait to get my hands on the next book in the series!

I gave this book a rating of 4/5.

Crown of Midnight will be released on August 27, 2013.

This book fulfills items in the following challenges:

2013 ARC Reading Challenge: 22

Book Review- Throne of Glass

I just finished reading Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas.

From Goodreads:

After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old
assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin. Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, each sponsored by a member of the king's council. If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she'll serve the kingdom for three years and then be granted her freedom.

Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilirating. But she's bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her... but it's the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.

Then one of the other contestants turns up dead... quickly followed by another.

Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.

Throne of Glass had it all.  A kick-butt heroine, lots of action, and a little bit of a romantic triangle.

Celaena (any idea how to pronounce that?) was an awesome heroine.  She was completely confident and fierce, yet girly and bookwormy.  I loved her!  So true to herself in every sense.

There was tons of action in the book.  A competition and fight to be the King's Champion.  Competitors being mysteriously killed. A little bit of magic.

And the romance.  Who will win her heart?  The Crown Prince or the Captain of the Guard?  It was a sweet love triangle--the guys weren't fighting over her.  They let her choose, in a sense.

Throne of Glass kept me turning the pages until the end.  I did get a little confused with some of the names of kings and places.  But I got the hang of it.  I can't wait to dive into Crown of Midnight next.

I gave this book a rating of 4/5.

Book Review- The Sleeping Beauty Proposal

I just finished reading The Sleeping Beauty Proposal by Sarah Strohmeyer.

From Goodreads:

At 36, Genie Michaels is beginning to feel that she has hit the snooze button on her life one too many times. When her "commitment-phobic" boyfriend Hugh proposes on national TV-not to Genie, but to an unknown mystery woman-Genie's wise-cracking friend Patty doesn't hesitate to give her some tough love: "You remind me of that idiot Sleeping Beauty, lying around like a zombie waiting for your prince. Well, guess what, he rode right past your castle and now you have a choice - you can either go back to bed or you can wake up!"

Genie chooses to wake up. After some questionable advice, her first step is to allow everyone to believe she's Hugh's real fiancée. She'll let him be the one to explain the mistake. Naturally the good news travels fast and, in a heartbeat, Genie's parents are booking a reception hall while friends are showering her with gifts. Genie feels bad about the deception, but at last everyone is dancing to her tune, and she can't help but enjoy it. Particularly when a certain too-handsome-for-his-own-good Greek carpenter shows up on the scene thinking he's hotter than Tabasco. Genie realizes that she never needed a man to start her life, to buy a home, to get a better job, or even to wear a diamond ring. And if Prince Charming wants to show up while she's at it, she just might teach him a thing or two.

I was on a chick-lit roll.  Two books in a row by Sarah Strohmeyer.  With a fairy tale title.  I love it!

More pure chick-lit goodness.  Yes, it was slightly predictable (although there was one thing where I was getting annoyed because she was so blind to it--but it turns out that it wasn't what I thought!) but in a good way.

I do have to say that while I enjoyed the story, I'm not so sure about the whole faking an engagement thing.  Planning the whole wedding just wouldn't work!  But it was fun to read about nonetheless.

I liked Genie and Patty and Todd and Nick.  Nick--oh yum!  I liked the ending and the happily ever after!

I gave this book a rating of 3.5/5.

Book Review- The Cinderella Pact

I finished reading The Cinderella Pact by Sarah Strohmeyer last night.

From Goodreads:

In this funny and big-hearted story by the author of The Secret Lives of Fortunate Wives, three
best friends make a pact to transform themselves into the glamorous women they've always wanted to be.

Nola Devlin has a secret identity. By day she is an overweight, frumpy, and overlooked editor, but by night she slips behind her keyboard and into her alter ego: Belinda Apple. Belinda is thin, gorgeous, and the author of a glamorous advice column, OnBeing Fab! Not even Nola's two best friends or her jealous sister (who worships Belinda as the "sister she never had") know her secret.

Nola is shocked when Belinda receives a desperate letter from Deb, her best friend and former cheerleading captain, now also overweight and depressed. Nola resolves to help her friend, and together with their pal Nancy, the trio form the "Cinderella Pact", a promise to be their own fairy- godmothers and help change one another for good.

But things don't turn out the way the three friends expect. Deb's formerly devoted husband drifts further away with every pound she loses, while Nola finds herself caught between a crush on her dreamy boss and the attentions of a charming British reporter. But which of them loves the real Nola? Only when her secret identity is revealed will she find out which man is right for her, and if her two best friends can forgive her deception.

It's been way too long since I've read a good chick-lit book.  I have to admit, I picked up this book just because of the title.  Anything that has anything to do with anything that sounds like Disney interests me.  I needed something to take on my beach vacation and this hit the spot.

I liked Nola.  She was real and down to earth but still had imagination and fantasy.  I loved how she wanted to better herself but it wasn't without challenges.  And of course, I loved all the Cinderella references.

I have another book by Sarah Strohmeyer to indulge in next--The Sleeping Beauty Proposal.

I gave this book a rating of 3.5/5.

Book Review- Never to Sleep

I finished reading Never to Sleep (Soul Screamers #5.5) by Rachel Vincent on Tuesday before I left for vacation.

From Goodreads:

Don't Close Your Eyes.

Sophie Cavanaugh is not going to let her freak of a cousin's strange psychiatric condition ruin high school for them both. Not after all the work she's put into cultivating the right look, and friends, and reputation. But then, Sophie sees something so frightening she lets out a blood-curdling scream--and finds herself stuck in a bizarre parallel world where nothing is safe and deadly creatures lurk just out of sight, waiting for her to close her eyes and sleep...forever.

Could this world be real? Or does insanity run in the family...?

After I finished the final book in the Soul Screamers series, I needed to go buy this novella.  It was the last one I had to read before I was done with the whole collection.

This was a nice look at how Sophie, Kaylee's cousin, came to discover the Netherworld.  And we get a closer look at how she's introduced to Luca.

I like reading about things from different points of view, so I enjoyed this novella.  I'm now done with the series. *sniff sniff*

I gave this book a rating of 3.5 out of 5.

Book Review- With All My Soul

I finished reading With All My Soul (Soul Screamers #7) by Rachel Vincent.

From Goodreads:

What does it mean when your school is voted the most dangerous in America?

It's time to kick some hellion butt...

After not really surviving her junior year (does "undead" count as survival?), Kaylee Cavanaugh has vowed to take back her school from the hellions causing all the trouble. She's going to find a way to turn the incarnations of Avarice, Envy and Vanity against one another in order to protect her friends and finish this war, once and forever.

But then she meets Wrath and understands that she's closer to the edge than she's ever been. And when one more person close to her is taken, Kaylee realizes she can't save everyone she loves without risking everything she has....

So bittersweet.  The Soul Screamers series is one my favorites.  I was so sad when I started reading this last installment.  I didn't want to say goodbye to Kaylee and everyone in the story.  But I'm very happy with how it all wrapped up!

My favorite characters were all there: Kaylee, Tod, Nash, Sabine, Emma and more.  As usual, I had a hard time remembering what happened in the last book, but thankfully, I was reminded pretty quickly and easily.  I was really eager to read this one.  Just how was Kaylee going to get the hellions off her back and away from her friends and family??  Will she survive it or is she going to die for real?

Without giving too much away, while the action at the end was happening, I was a little confused.  But then it was all explained and I loved it.  It ended well and I'm happy and satisfied!

Oh, I forgot!   Now I need to go back and read the novella that I missed.  Not time to say goodbye to this series just yet!

I gave this book a rating of 4.5/5.

2013 Sophomore Reading Challenge-- July Update

2013 Sophomore Reading Challenge

What books count towards the SRC?
Any second YA or MG book published by an author in 2013 counts – it can be the second in a series, a new series, or a standalone. The only requirement is that it is the SECOND book the author has published in the YA or MG realm (and it must publish in 2013 in your home country)! There is a Goodreads group for the challenge, which includes a selection of books that would count for the challenge – as you can see, there are probably many many books on that list you are planning on reading already :)
The list will be updated as I’m able, but please feel free to read ANY Sophomore book! It does not have to be the second book in a series, just the second YA/MG book the author has published, period.
When does the challenge run?
Books read before January 2014 count for this challenge. This includes books you may have access to now in ARC form!
Why should I join this challenge?
Reading debut novels is AWESOME. It is by far my favorite challenge – it allows me to find many new authors that I love. What better way to support these authors than to read their next published book?
What are the guidelines of the challenge?
Your challenge is to read 10 sophomore YA/MG novels in 2013. To officially participate, you need a Goodreads account or blog where you post reviews in English.
What should I do if I’m an author coming out with a sophomore novel?
I would love to feature you on my blog! Please e-mail me (shanynlee at gmail.com) and let me know if you’d like to be interviewed, featured, would like to offer a giveaway, etc.
How do I join?
Link your blog or Goodreads account below, and make a list of the sophomore novels you’re looking forward to :)
There will be prize packs given away to challenge participants throughout next year. You will receive an automatic entry for signing up to participate – options for additional entries will be announced at the time of the giveway.

  1.  The Elite (The Selection #2) by Kiera Cass
  2.  Siege and Storm (The Grisha #2) by Leigh Bardugo
  3.  Spies and Prejudice by Talia Vance
