Book Review- Poor Little Dead Girls

I just finished reading Poor Little Dead Girls by Lizzie Friend.

For some reason, I have a love of boarding schools. I'm not sure why but I love reading stories about them. So I knew I wanted to read this one. And it sounded a little mysterious and spooky too which made it seem even better.

Right away I liked Sadie. She wasn't your typical boarding school kid. She got there through hard work and a scholarship. Part of me thought she would turn into one of the stereotypes, but I'm glad she never did.

There were lots of little twists in the books. People that I thought were going to be bad, weren't. And reasonings behind the secret society were pretty intriguing, in a weird way.

All in all, the book kept me entertained and interested the whole time!

Book Review- Tales from My Closet

I finished reading Tales from My Closet by Jennifer Anne Moses on Friday.

This is a young teen book about 5 fashionistas and how they do or don't fit into their school. It's a story about friendship. It's a story about relationships and families. And it's slightly a book about bullying.

This is definitely geared toward the younger teen crowd. And while it wasn't something that was entirely engaging to me, I see how it could keep the attention of a young teen.

Book Review- The Assassin and the Underworld

I finished reading The Assassin and the Underworld (Throne of Glass #0.3) by Sarah J. Maas.

From Goodreads:

slavery in the kingdom, she jumps at the chance to strike a blow against an evil practice. The misson is a dark and deadly affair which takes Celaena from the rooftops of the city to the bottom of the sewer—and she doesn’t like what she finds there.

This novella felt extra short. I mean, I get that it's a short story but I kind of felt like there wasn't much to this one. There was only a little bit of action. Buuuut I did really like our introduction to just how Celaena and Sam finally came into their relationship. Still love this series so much so though!!

Book Review- Racing Savannah

I finished Racing Savannah (Hundred Oaks #4) by Miranda Kenneally today for an Around the World ARC Tour.

With her dream of becoming a horse jockey, Savannah isn’t exactly one to follow the rules either. She’s not going to let someone tell her a girl isn’t tough enough to race. Sure, it’s dangerous. Then again, so is dating Jack…

Usually I find the books in this series way too religious. But I was happy when I realized that there wasn't a hint of any religion in this book. Yay! And it was by far my favorite of the series!

I loved the topic--horseback riding. I've secretly always loved horses and wanted to learn how to ride them. So this book was fascinating to me. I loved reading about being a jockey.

And I loved Savannah (love the name too!) Her humor was great and she was so strong even though she was raised in a way that I'm not used to--poor with college not a given. I'm still not exactly sold on Jack though. He grew on me by the end, but during the story, I wasn't sure how he was going to turn out.

I really enjoyed this one!

Book Review- Frigid

I finished reading Frigid by J. Lynn last week on the plane for an Around the World ARC Tour.

Wow. This book was a straight up romance novel geared toward a slightly younger crowd. There were so many sexual scenes and words. I was reading it on the plane and felt like I had to make sure no one could see the words in the book. But I did enjoy it!
This was a classic romance story--boy and girl have been best friends forever. They're in love with each other but don't know how the other feels. We get to follow along to see if they end up together.

I liked Sydney but she had some major issues. Her self-esteem was extremely low and she had trust issues. Although considering what a man-whore Kyler was, I guess I don't blame her. And did he really have to sleep with every female if he really had such feelings for her?

That being said, I liked their time together in the cabin where they figured out their feelings. There was a little mystery/danger thrown in, but I had it figured it out from the beginning.

Overall, if you want a romance novel with younger main characters, then this might be the book for you!

Book Review- The Assassin and the Dessert

I just finished reading The Assassin and the Dessert (Throne of Glass #0.2) by Sarah J. Maas.

This was the second novella in the Throne of Glass series. In this story, we learn more about how Calaena came to be the great assassin she is today. We learn about how she goes to the Red Dessert to train with the Silent Assassin and the master. She befriends a sweet girl and there was a slight dusting of romance (not even sure you could really call it that.)

There was a twist at the end, but I had figured it out earlier so it came as no surprise. The novella was definitely interesting enough and I look forward to reading the third one!

Book Review- Ralph's Party

I just finished reading Ralph's Party by Lisa Jewell.

I was expecting this to be a cute British chick-lit story. Instead there were times that I was grossed out and felt that there was over-sharing involved.

I just couldn't really get into the story. I didn't care much about the characters or what was happening. At first, I got confused about which was with which character but at the end you could see the connection of all of them.

I have a couple of other books by this author on my bookshelves. Hopefully I'll like them better.

Book Review- The Assassin and the Pirate Lord

I just finished reading the novella The Assassin and the Pirate Lord (Throne of Glass #0.1) by Sarah J. Maas.

This was a quick glimpse of the life Calaena lived before we meet her in Throne of Glass. It was interesting to see what she was like as Adarlan's Assassin. And of course, we get to meet Sam. Even though in this novella, they are just starting to be friendly, you can see the spark and the chemistry. They make a great team.

A fun story and I look forward to reading more of the novellas!

Book Review- The Year of the Great Seventh

I just finished reading The Year of the Great Seventh by Teresa Orts for a blog tour.

I think the idea for the plot of this story was fantastic. Mythology has always fascinated me so this played right up to it. Unfortunately, I didn't like the characters or some of the writing.

Sophie seemed strong sometimes but then weak others. The insta-love between her and Nate didn't ring true. And it got annoying to read about her pining for him and how beautiful he was and how she couldn't live without him. Um, no. Nate was more the more believable of the two. He realized that he shouldn't be with her and tried to stay away. He was more stoic.

Then some of the writing was off. Things were over-described and word choices were awkward. Also, I'm not sure any parents (who seem as with-it as Sophie's do) would just sent their 16 year old to NYC without checking any references or anything. I'm pretty sure the parents would be chaperoning. Also, a taxi accident with the driver being drunk being an excuse for what happens at the end? The accident would be too easy to look up and I'm pretty sure her parents would be all over the situation and realize that there was no accident.

So yeah, I did have some issues with the book. But that didn't stop the plot from being intriguing and engrossing. And just when you think everything's good and safe, bam! There's a cliffhanger that makes you want the next book in your hands as soon as possible!

Book Review- Artichoke's Heart

I finished reading Artichoke's Heart by Suzanne Supplee today.

I think this book deals with an important topic--obesity--in a such great ways. It shows that 1) You can be loved for yourself no matter what your body looks like and 2) You can lose weight in the correct way, to be healthy.

Rosie was such a great character. She seemed so real. Not wanting to exercise at first and being embarrassed. But soon coming to love who she was and taking her health more seriously. And she showed that she struggled, not that it was just suddenly easy to lose weight. She stayed true to herself the whole book.

But the book wasn't all serious. It had a gossipy southern charm to it. I think this would be a great book for any teenage girl to read!

Book Review- Never to Sleep

I finished reading Never to Sleep (Soul Screamers #5.5) by Rachel Vincent on Tuesday before I left for vacation.

After I finished the final book in the Soul Screamers series, I needed to go buy this novella. It was the last one I had to read before I was done with the whole collection.

This was a nice look at how Sophie, Kaylee's cousin, came to discover the Netherworld. And we get a closer look at how she's introduced to Luca.

I like reading about things from different points of view, so I enjoyed this novella. I'm now done with the series. *sniff sniff*

Book Review- With All My Soul

I finished reading With All My Soul (Soul Screamers #7) by Rachel Vincent.

So bittersweet. The Soul Screamers series is one my favorites. I was so sad when I started reading this last installment. I didn't want to say goodbye to Kaylee and everyone in the story. But I'm very happy with how it all wrapped up!

My favorite characters were all there: Kaylee, Tod, Nash, Sabine, Emma and more. As usual, I had a hard time remembering what happened in the last book, but thankfully, I was reminded pretty quickly and easily. I was really eager to read this one. Just how was Kaylee going to get the hellions off her back and away from her friends and family?? Will she survive it or is she going to die for real?

Without giving too much away, while the action at the end was happening, I was a little confused. But then it was all explained and I loved it. It ended well and I'm happy and satisfied!

Oh, I forgot! Now I need to go back and read the novella that I missed. Not time to say goodbye to this series just yet!

Book Review- Dirty Little Secret

I just finished reading Dirty Little Secret by Jennifer Echols for an Around the World ARC Tour.

I enjoyed this little peek into the life of a county star wannabe. I've always been fascinated by stardom so this was a good one for me.

Reading back over my reviews of the other two Jennifer Echols books I've read (Forget You and Such a Rush), I never seem to like the main character. But I really liked Bailey. She was real. And believable. And even with everything that her family put her through and made her feel, she still acknowledged that they meant everything to her.

Then there was Sam. At times, he seemed like such a good guy. But then it also just seemed that once he figured out who Bailey was, he was just using her to move up in the country world. Not cool.

I liked the plot in this one too. It flowed nicely and wrapped up well. This is definitely my favorite book that I've read by Jennifer Echols so far!

I gave this book a rating of 4/5.
