Book Review- My Heart and Other Black Holes
I finished reading My Heart and Other Black Holes by Jasmine Warga today for an Around the World ARC Tour.
From Goodreads:
A stunning novel about the transformative power of love, perfect for fans of Jay Asher and Laurie Halse Anderson.
Sixteen-year-old physics nerd Aysel is obsessed with plotting her own death. With a mother who can barely look at her without wincing, classmates who whisper behind her back, and a father whose violent crime rocked her small town, Aysel is ready to turn her potential energy into nothingness.
There's only one problem: she's not sure she has the courage to do it alone. But once she discovers a website with a section called Suicide Partners, Aysel's convinced she's found her solution—Roman, a teenage boy who's haunted by a family tragedy, is looking for a partner. Even though Aysel and Roman have nothing in common, they slowly start to fill in each other's broken lives. But as their suicide pact becomes more concrete, Aysel begins to question whether she really wants to go through with it. Ultimately, she must choose between wanting to die or trying to convince Roman to live so they can discover the potential of their energy together.
This was a pretty dark story with rays of light. I don't think I've read a story that was so open and direct about suicide. And I think there should be more. I think this is an important story for teens to read so that they know that they're not alone in their feelings.
I liked getting to know Aysel. I felt so bad for her and for Roman. They were so different yet had so many of the same feelings. I liked watching their relationship grow.
I really wasn't sure where the end was going to go. I kind of guessed it right at the last minute but I wasn't sure. And while it's heartbreaking, its real. Such a tough subject but such a real one.
I gave this book a rating of 3.5/5.
My Heart and Other Black Holes will be released on February 10, 2015.
*FTC Disclosure: I was given this book for free for an honest review as part of the Around the World Tours.

Book Review- Allegiant (Divergent #3)
I just finished reading Allegiant (Divergent #3) by Veronica Roth.
From Goodreads:
The faction-based society that Tris Prior once believed in is shattered--fractured by violence and
But Tris’s new reality is even more alarming than the one she left behind. Old discoveries are quickly rendered meaningless. Explosive new truths change the hearts of those she loves. And once again, Tris must battle to comprehend the complexities of human nature--and of herself--while facing impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice, and love.
Told from a riveting dual perspective, Allegiant, by #1 New York Times best-selling author Veronica Roth, brings the Divergent series to a powerful conclusion while revealing the secrets of the dystopian world that has captivated millions of readers in Divergent and Insurgent.
power struggles and scarred by loss and betrayal. So when offered a chance to explore the world past the limits she’s known, Tris is ready. Perhaps beyond the fence, she and Tobias will find a simple new life together, free from complicated lies, tangled loyalties, and painful memories.
I really enjoyed the first two books so I was eager to read the ending to the trilogy (although I need to get my hands on the Four novellas). Once again, I couldn't remember what had happened in Insurgent and only vaguely remembered parts from the Divergent movie. But I think I quickly caught up.
I really liked Tris and Tobias's relationship in this book. I think it grew in the right ways and after not being too sure of it and him in the previous book, I think I decisively liked him in this one. And of course, I still loved Tris.
We got more background on the factions and where the group came from. And while at first I found it a little confusing, I did ultimately find it intriguing. To think of how their "city" came about was interesting.
I remember that when the book came out, a lot of people didn't like it. But the only problem I had with it was the switching back and forth between Tris and Tobias telling the story (I can't remember if this occurred in the other two books). Most of the time it alternated, but sometimes two chapters in a row were told by the same character but I'd forget to pay attention. Anyways, yes, the ending was way sad. But it was right and it fit and it made sense. It just felt complete. And with that, I can't wait for the next two movies!
I gave this book a rating of 4/5.

Book Review- The Start of Me and You
I finished reading The Start of Me and You by Emery Lord last Sunday for an Around the World ARC Tour.
From Goodreads:
It’s been a year since it happened—when Paige Hancock’s first boyfriend died in an accident. After shutting out the world for a year, Paige is finally ready for a second chance at high school . . . and she has a plan. First: Get her old crush, Ryan Chase, to date her—the perfect way to convince everyone she’s back to normal. Next: Join a club—simple, it’s high school after all. But when Ryan’s sweet, nerdy cousin, Max, moves to town and recruits Paige for the Quiz Bowl team (of all things!) her perfect plan is thrown for a serious loop. Will Paige be able to face her fears and finally open herself up to the life she was meant to live?
Brimming with heartfelt relationships and authentic high-school dynamics The Start of Me and You proves that it’s never too late for second chances.
I really enjoyed this book. I felt so bad for Paige. I'm not quite sure of the right words, but I found it so real that she was grieving and yet she knew that she didn't know him that well but that part of the hard part of moving on was that everyone pitied her. If that makes any sense.
I liked that she knew who she was and stuck to it. And yes, the ending is totally predictable but that didn't stop me from enjoying the journey of getting there.
The whole cast of characters was pretty great, actually. I loved all of her friends. Such a great group of girls. Normal girls. Not the popular ones, not the outcast type. Just your typical great group of tight-knit gal pals. And Max and Ryan were great guys. Since we knew early on that Paige had crushed on Ryan for a while, I thought maybe we would find out that he was a jerk or something. But I was happy to see that we didn't.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Paige's journey in dealing with her grief and growing into the person that she would become.
I gave this book a rating of 4/5.
The Start of Me and You will be released on March 31, 2015.

Blog Tour- Stillwater Rising
I just finished reading Stillwater Rising by Steena Holmes for a Booksparks University Fall Reading Challenge.
About the book:
After losing her son in an
elementary school shooting that devastates the tight-knit community of
Stillwater Bay, Jennifer Crowne finds herself unable to settle back into her
role of perfect stay-at-home mom and committee organizer. Meanwhile, her best
friend, Mayor Charlotte Stone, struggles to keep the town together, and
Charlotte’s husband, the school principal, may not be the hero everyone thinks
him to be.
As they try to heal from this
irrevocable trauma, Jenn and Charlotte find themselves at a crossroads—within
the town and within their friendship. For Jenn, broken and grieving, there is
no going back, and she demands that the school be closed so that she can bury
the past. Yet Charlotte is equally desperate to hold the town together,
fighting the school closure and helping the shooter’s mother regain her place
in the community. Jenn and Charlotte’s relationship is put to the ultimate test
as each weighs her own interests against the bonds of their friendship.
School shootings are terrifying. Even more so because I'm a teacher. So this one struck me deeply. But it's not just a story about loss. It's also about grieving, hope and friendship.
I can't even begin to image when Jenn had gone through. And honestly, I'm surprised that more of the parents of the kids who were killed didn't feel the same way. I certainly didn't blame her or fault her for her feelings. And I found myself disliking her husband Robert because I didn't feel like he did care about what happened.
I also felt so bad for Julia, the mother of the teenage who murdered the kids. I could feel her pain. And I can't even begin to imagine what SHE felt knowing that her own son had done the unthinkable.
As for the other characters, they were hit or miss for me. We know Jordan, the school principal had a secret. I thought I knew what it was but I was wrong (and I should have seen it!) The mayor of the town and the reporter were okay but I felt like some of their actions and thoughts were misplaced.
This definitely wasn't an easy book to read but it does show how a community can band together in a time of tragedy to survive.
I gave this book a rating of 3.5/5.
