Welcome to 2012 TBR PILE Reading Challenge!!!

We all have those books. We buy them, win them, they're gifted to us.. Then we put them up on a bookshelf and there they stay, collecting dust, waiting for the time when we'll finally decide to pick them up..

Join us on a quest to dust off your TBR Pile and read all the books you've been telling yourself you'll read next time you'll get a chance.. This is your chance! And we've got PRIZES!!! :D

Challenge guidelines:

This challenge will run from Jan 1, 2012 - Dec 31, 2012.

As we would like to see quality reviews linked up to our monthly wrap-ups, only bloggers can enter. Sorry about that!

Any genre, length or format of book counts, as long as it is a book that's been sitting on your shelf for some time now. Only books released in 2011 and earlier! NO ARCs and 2012 fresh-off-the-press releases allowed!

You can list your books in advance or just put them in a wrap-up post. If you list them, feel free to change them as the mood takes you.

When you sign up in the linky, put the direct link to your post about joining the 2012 TBR PILE Reading Challenge (You need to include the info + host list + challenge button. You can also grab the button code and add it to your sidebar!)

You can move up levels, but no moving down.

Sign-ups will be open until Dec 15, 2012, so feel free to join at any time throughout the year.

At the end of each month one of the hosts will post a wrap-up. Every wrap-up will have it's unique theme, a mini-challenge, a giveaway and place for you to link up your reviews from this month. For each review you link up, you will get one entry in a drawing of one book of choice from Book Depository. It's open to INTERNATIONALS. For participating in the mini-challenge you will get +1 entry.

If you miss a wrap-up post + giveaway, you can link up your reviews next month. Do not, however, try to link up one review twice - we will be checking ;)

December is a wrap-up for the whole year. All the book reviews you linked up January-November + the ones you'll link up in December will be entered into a HUGE giveaway - 12 books, 12 winners, INTERNATIONAL.

Book Review- Try Not to Breathe

I finished Try Not to Breathe by Jennifer Hubbard earlier today.

From Goodreads:

Despite his mother’s anxious hovering and the rumors at school, he’s trying to forget the darkness from which he has escaped. But it doesn’t help that he’s still hiding guilty secrets, or that he longs for a girl who may not return his feelings. Then he befriends Nicki, who is using psychics to seek contact with her dead father. This unlikely friendship thaws Ryan to the point where he can face the worst in himself. He and Nicki confide in one another the things they never thought they’d tell anyone—but their confessions are trickier than they seem, and the fallout tests the bounds of friendship and forgiveness.

Often times, I have a hard time connecting when the main character is a male.  And unfortunately, that was the case in this story.  I never really connected with either of the main characters--Ryan or Nicki, or with the story. 

Sure, I felt sorry for Ryan and Nicki and their own personal problems.  But I didn't really care that much.  Which is sad because I wanted to.  Suicide is such a strong topic and I wanted to feel for them but I just felt distant.  And I don't think the way the story was written helped much either.  I just never really got into it.

It wasn't a bad story by any means.  And it did hold my attention. But I just could never get as emotional wrapped up as I wanted to be.

I gave this book a rating of 3/5.

Book Review- Night's Edge

I just finished reading Night's Edge by Maggie Shayne, Charlaine Harris, and Barbara Hambly.

I enjoyed all three of these stories.  I initially read it because I wanted to read any books that was related to the Sookie Stackhouse series, which "Dancers in the Dark" was.  But honestly, I don't even remember how they were related.  I do remember really enjoying all the talk about the dancing, which I also enjoyed in "Someone Else's Shadow". I always find it hard to write reviews about anthologies so I'll just leave it with: this was a good one.

I gave this book a rating of 3.5/5.

Book Review- Wither

I just finished reading Wither by Lauren DeStefano.

Wither was another one of those books that I had heard people raving about, but didn't know anything about.  So I was a little hesitant when starting it since I don't always love what everyone else does.  But I really enjoyed this story!

I thought the premise of the story was pretty unique--The population is dying out.  Women die at the age of 20 and men die at the age of 25.  To combat that, and antidote is trying to be made but meanwhile young teenage girls are being kidnapped to brides of rich men so they can bear more children.  Most of these men have multiple wives.

I really liked Rhine.  She tried so hard to stay strong but showed some vulnerability in her fondness for Linden.  And I loved how she bonded with her sister wives.  Jenna and Cecily were fun characters too.  And I felt bad for Linden.  He was just as much trapped in his own home as the sister wives were too.  But I felt like he really loved Rhine and wanted her to be happy.  Gabriel, was okay.  I didn't really get Rhine's attraction to him, but to each her own.

I got pretty engrossed in this story.  I could never figure out if she was going to be able to escape or if she would change her mind and stay in the house.  But the ending was a good one and I'm glad I have the next book in the Chemical Garden series, Fever, coming to me next. And I just saw that there is a short story from the first bride's point of view that I think I will download to read next.  It's called Seeds of Wither.

I gave this book a rating of 4/5.

I just finished reading Bite by Laurel K. Hamilton, Charlaine Harris, MaryJanice Davidson, Angela Knight, and Vickie Taylor.

This is going to be a short review because it's always hard for to write about anthologies.  It's hard for me to go deeper into short stories.

I've only ever read books by Charlaine Harris and MaryJanice Davidson before.  So while the other short stories were interesting and fun, I wasn't completely into their world.  I enjoyed reading MaryJanice Davidson's story.  It took me a couple of pages to get where Queen Betsy came into play.  But I so love her.  She's the first paranormal character that I loved and got me into my paranormal phase.  As for Charlaine Harris's story...it was interesting to read more about Sookie's cousin Hadley.  I got a little bit more of a back story than we got in the novel.  

Overall, fun stories to read!

I gave this book a rating of 3/5.

Book Review- Fairest of All

I just finished reading Fairest of All: A Tale of the Wicked Queen by Serena Valentino.

The tale of the young princess and her evil stepmother, the Wicked Queen, is widely known. Despite a few variations from telling to telling, the story remains the same--the Queen was jealous of the girl's beauty, and this jealousy culminated in the Queen's attempt on the sweet, naive girl's life.

Another tale far less often spoken of is the one that explains what caused the Queen to become so contemptuously vile. Still, some have attempted to guess at the reason. Perhaps the Queen's true nature was that of a wicked hag and her beautiful, regal appearance a disguise used to fool the King. Others claim that the Queen might have hated the girl for her resemblance to the King's first wife. Mostly, the Queen is painted as a morally abhorrent woman who never loved another being during the course of her miserable life.

In fact, the theories about exactly what cause the Queen's obsessive vanity and jealous rage are too numerous to catalog. This book recounts a version of the story that has remained untold until now. It is a tragic tale of love and loss, and it contains a bit of magic. It is a tale of the Wicked Queen...

It's no secret that I love anything that has to do with Disney or with a fairy tale.  So when I saw this book, I knew I had to have it.  Unfortunately it sat on my shelf for a while until my Disbrides Book Club decided to read it.

I enjoyed this telling of the Snow White story from the Queen's point of view.  I know the Disney version backwards and forwards.  And my husband and I have been watching Once Upon a Time on tv so we know that version of the Queen too.  But this was unlike any version I have heard of yet.

I loved reading that the Queen was a good person to start with (and really to end with).  I loved realizing that she loved Snow as if she were her own daughter, not just a step daughter.  And unfortunately, things happened that made the Queen turn into the character that we know from the fairy tale. 

I don't want to give too much away, but I loved the little things that were new in this version--the three sisters, who the face in the magic mirror was, the Queen's first handmaid, and other things. 

I thought the Queen's choice at the end was interesting, but I think it might go over younger readers heads.  And the verrrrry end...as I was reading it, I thought it was going to go one way and I was thinking "Oh no!" but it pleasantly surprised me.

This was a fun retelling of Snow White and if you are interested in retellings of fairy tales, then I think you should definitely pick this one up!

Any genre, length or format of book counts, as long as it is a book that's been sitting on your shelf for some time now. Only books released in 2011 and earlier! NO ARCs and 2012 fresh-off-the-press releases allowed!

You can list your books in advance or just put them in a wrap-up post. If you list them, feel free to change them as the mood takes you.

When you sign up in the linky, put the direct link to your post about joining the 2012 TBR PILE Reading Challenge (You need to include the info + host list + challenge button. You can also grab the button code and add it to your sidebar!)

You can move up levels, but no moving down.

Sign-ups will be open until Dec 15, 2012, so feel free to join at any time throughout the year.

At the end of each month one of the hosts will post a wrap-up. Every wrap-up will have it's unique theme, a mini-challenge, a giveaway and place for you to link up your reviews from this month. Book Review- Love is the Higher Law

I finished reading Love is the Higher Law today by David Levithan.

From Goodreads:

The lives of three teens—Claire, Jasper, and Peter—are altered forever on September 11, 2001. Claire, a high school junior, has to get to her younger brother in his classroom. Jasper, a college sophomore from Brooklyn, wakes to his parents’ frantic calls from Korea, wondering if he’s okay. Peter, a classmate of Claire’s, has to make his way back to school as everything happens around him.

Here are three teens whose intertwining lives are reshaped by this catastrophic event. As each gets to know the other, their moments become wound around each other’s in a way that leads to new understandings, new friendships, and new levels of awareness for the world around them and the people close by.

David Levithan has written a novel of loss and grief, but also one of hope and redemption as his characters slowly learn to move forward in their lives, despite being changed forever.
 
After reading this book, I find myself conflicted about what I thought on it.
 
On one hand, I really didn't care about any of the characters.  If the book wasn't on such an important topic, I don't think I would have enjoyed it at all.  I am such a character person--they are what make books great for me.  But these teenagers just didn't do it for me.  I wanted to feel shock and horror and terror and sadness and caring but I didn't really get that from any of them.
 
On the other hard, I feel like this is such a very important book.  It's the only book I've read about 9/11.  And there need to be more out there.  I mean, I know there are nonfiction books out there, but I think there needs to be more fiction out there.  Young adult today would have been so young when the tragedy happens that I think there need to be more for them to understand and just FEEL about it.
 
So I'm conflicted.  I wish I liked the main characters more than I did.
 
I gave this book a rating of 3/5.
