I just finished reading Swoon by Nina Malkin.
From the back cover:
Torn from her native New York City and dumped in the land of cookie-cutter preps, Candice is resigned to accept her posh, dull fate. Nothing ever happens in Swoon, Connecticut...until Dice's perfect, privileged cousin Penelope nearly dies in a fall from an old tree, and her spirit intertwines with that of a ghost. His name? Sinclair Youngblood Powers. His mission? Revenge. And while Pen is oblivious to the possession, Dice is all too aware of Sin. She's intensely drawn to him--but not at all crazy about the havoc he's wreaking. Determined to exorcise the demon, Dice accidentally sets Sin loose, gives him flesh, makes him formidable. Now she must destroy an even more potent--and irresistible--adversary, before the whole town succumbs to Sin's will. Only trouble is, she's in love with him.
I am honestly not sure what I think of this book. At times I think I liked and enjoyed it and at other times, I had to force myself to read it.
First of all, I think there was way too much sex and drugs in the book. I'm definitely not one of those people who thinks that those elements shouldn't be in YA novels, but I guess I just wasn't prepared for it. For some reason, it made me uncomfortable, which normally doesn't happen.
As for the characters, I was conflicted there as well. Dice, the narrator of the story, was for me at times not interesting, while at other times I felt for her conflicting emotions about Sin. And as for Sin--I wanted to hate him. I surely hated what he was doing. But for some reason, I liked the way he was with Dice and the way he was protective of her. And while I knew that Pen was under Sin's spell, her actions were just too promiscuous for my liking. I think my favorite character was a secondary character named Marsh. I felt for her home life and I loved how she fell in love toward the end of the story.
Overall, I thought the premise of the story was a good idea, but I just couldn't get into it.
I gave this book a rating of 3/5.

Great review - I have this one but yet to pick it up...I loved your honest review, and sooner or later hope to read it...but now I dont feel so guilty for it being at the bottom of my to read pile! :)
ReplyDeleteThe first several reviews I read for this book were nothing but gushing, no real insight into the book, no help at all. Lately the reviews have been more helpful and have made me glad that I didn't just buy it, but waited. Thanks!
