Book Review- Poor Little Dead Girls

I just finished reading Poor Little Dead Girls by Lizzie Friend.

For some reason, I have a love of boarding schools. I'm not sure why but I love reading stories about them. So I knew I wanted to read this one. And it sounded a little mysterious and spooky too which made it seem even better.

Right away I liked Sadie. She wasn't your typical boarding school kid. She got there through hard work and a scholarship. Part of me thought she would turn into one of the stereotypes, but I'm glad she never did.

There were lots of little twists in the books. People that I thought were going to be bad, weren't. And reasonings behind the secret society were pretty intriguing, in a weird way.

All in all, the book kept me entertained and interested the whole time!

Book Review- PODs

Yesterday I finished reading PODs by Michelle Pickett for an Around the World ARC Tour.

From Goodreads:

Eva and David hide from the infected in the abandoned PODs. Together they try to build a life--a new beginning. But the infected follow and are relentless in their attacks. Leaving Eva and David to fight for survival, and pray for a cure.

Zombie novels. I'm never sure whether I'm going to enjoy them are not. This was somewhere right in the middle. (the characters were never called zombies but that's pretty much what they were)

Liked: I really liked the characters. I liked Eva's personality and strength. I liked that she tried to stay positive through everything. And I liked David and how he never gave up on Eva.

Didn't care for: The constant making out in front of people was a little weird. I get times of privacy might be few and far between but still. Awkward.

Liked: The plot of the sub-PODs and being able to escape the virus. Also the idea of starting communities over again.

Didn't care for: The actual zombie attacks. A little gory and gruesome for my liking.

Overall, an interesting novel and I think I'll pick up the second one when it comes out.

Book Review- Tales from My Closet

I finished reading Tales from My Closet by Jennifer Anne Moses on Friday.

This is a young teen book about 5 fashionistas and how they do or don't fit into their school. It's a story about friendship. It's a story about relationships and families. And it's slightly a book about bullying.

This is definitely geared toward the younger teen crowd. And while it wasn't something that was entirely engaging to me, I see how it could keep the attention of a young teen.

Book Review- The Distance Between Us

I just finished reading The Distance Between Us by Kasie West for an Around the World ARC Tour.

This book was a Cinderella-ish story. Not all about an evil stepmom but more about a poor girl who falls in love with a rich guy and he loves her back. Sigh. I'm such a true romantic. And I have to say that I really enjoyed this book.

The highlight of the book was Caymen's sense of humor. Her dry, sarcastic wit had me cracking up over and over. I loved it! And I was completely prepared to hate Xander but I didn't. He was just an all around good guy who happened to come from money.

There was a small, sweet little twist at the end that just makes you smile. All around, a great book that I couldn't get enough of.

Book Review- Ashes to Ashes

Last night, I finished reading Ashes to Ashes by Melissa Walker for an Around the World ARC Tour.

I really liked the premise of this story--just what happens when you die? And it was done without being preachy AT ALL. Thank goodness! I loved the idea of an dimension (is that the right word?) you go to so you can "haunt" the ones you love. But in this book, haunting isn't a scary thing--its a peaceful thing that helps them move on in their lives.

I have to be honest that I didn't really connect with Callie. Maybe it was her daredevil ways. I'm not sure but I just never really got there. I did love Carson though. Oh and Thatcher. And I just pitied Nick.

The end was a huge twist! One I definitely did not see coming at all. And I love when that happens! I'm definitely intrigued to see what's going to happen in the sequel!

Book Review- Cress

Last night I finished reading Cress (Lunar Chronicles #3) by Marissa Meyer for an Around the World ARC Tour.

I love how these series are related to fairy tales! This book was so easy to see the how it was supposed to be related to Rapunzel. The long hair. Being trapped alone in a satellite (her tower). The evil female adult. And a captain to rescue her (the captain.)

This book was quite large and while I enjoyed it, I found it taking me a long time to get through. It wasn't one I could fly through but really had to think about what I was reading. But that didn't stop me from liking it.

I liked the twist with the Doctor and who his child was. And I liked what happened with Emperor Kai. And I loved all the characters--Cinder and Scarlett and Wolf and Iko. (Iko cracks me up! Her humor is hilarious!) The plot was really interesting but I feel like I can't say much without giving it away.

Even though the book was so large, there still seems to be a lot left to happen. There is a fourth book in the series that will involve Snow White and take place on the moon! I can't wait to read it!

Book Review- Racing Savannah

I finished Racing Savannah (Hundred Oaks #4) by Miranda Kenneally today for an Around the World ARC Tour.

Usually I find the books in this series way too religious. But I was happy when I realized that there wasn't a hint of any religion in this book. Yay! And it was by far my favorite of the series!

I loved the topic--horseback riding. I've secretly always loved horses and wanted to learn how to ride them. So this book was fascinating to me. I loved reading about being a jockey.

And I loved Savannah (love the name too!) Her humor was great and she was so strong even though she was raised in a way that I'm not used to--poor with college not a given. I'm still not exactly sold on Jack though. He grew on me by the end, but during the story, I wasn't sure how he was going to turn out.

I really enjoyed this one!

Book Review- Hex Hall

I just finished reading Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins.

Cindy from Princess Bookie knows what's on my bookshelves and asked if she could pick what I read next. I said sure and she picked Hex Hall for me since I love books about boarding schools. And she was sooo right! I loved this book!

This book was light and funny and I loved Sophie's sense of humor. I also loved her sense of loyalty and her good heart. I also enjoyed the side characters of Elodie and Archer. I certainly didn't want to like Elodie but for some reason I did. And Archer too!

This book was a fun way of looking at the life of witches, fairies, shapeshifters, werewolves, and vampires. I loved how they all interacted and lived together.

There were some surprises that I enjoyed and didn't see coming. Always love when that happens! I have the next book in the series, Demonglass, in my hands and I can't wait to start!

Book Review- Shadow of the Mark

I just finished Shadow of the Mark (Carrier #2) by Leigh Fallon for an Around the World ARC Tour.

I read the first book 2 years ago, so I had a bit of a hard time remembering what was going on. I kind of got myself caught up, but not completely.

I liked the DeRises. I liked Megan and Adam together and it was interesting to read about how their elements reacted to each other.

But there were lots of things that left me confused. I didn't really get the whole Knox versus the Order thing. And the end confused me with the fifth element thing. It mostly just went over my head.

It kept my attention well enough but I think I would have enjoyed it more if I was better able to understand what was going on.

Book Review- Perfect Ruin

I just finished reading Perfect Ruin (The Internment Chronicles #1) by Lauren DeStefano for an Around the World ARC Tour.

I have been in such a reading slump lately. I haven't been excited to pick up the books I've been reading. And I couldn't really get into anything. Until I picked up Perfect Ruin. This book got my out of my slump, and quickly!

I absolutely love this story. I loved the plot and the characters. I loved the writing. Just a great all-around book.

The plot is completely original. A whole city up in the clouds. The people who live in the city know about the ground but aren't allowed to try to get there. In fact, those that do try, are called "Jumpers" and are almost disgraced. It was so neat to read about this world and it's rules. The whole idea of being betrothed seems archaic yet in this world there's something romantic about it. How this person is perfect for you and you've known it since birth.

And then I loved all the characters. Morgan is the perfect main character. She's got her own dreams and notions yet down to earth. (I just realized that might not be the perfect analogy for this book..lol). And her best friend is the perfect sidekick. Pen who is always there for her and strong yet slightly naïve when it comes to their world. Basil is the perfect guy. He is completely in tune with Morgan. He knows her feelings and is completely there for her, even when others wouldn't be.

There were a couple of turns in this book but nothing drastic. It just flowed so well and made me want not want to put the book down. The ending leaves me wanting to know what is going to happen next--I don't want to wait. This is definitely my favorite book of the year!!

Book Review- Things I Can't Forget

I just finished reading Thing I Can't Forget by Miranda Kenneally for an Around the World ARC Tour.

I always forget just how preachy and in-your-face religious these books are. And that turns me off at the beginning. But I make myself plow through and end up enjoying them.

I liked Kate, for the most part. I liked that when she was really needed, she looked past her strict beliefs and helped her best friend. I do think that she went too far with her beliefs. If she wanted to be super religious, then good for her and that's her right. But I don't think it was right of her to judge those that weren't. They're entitled to her beliefs just as she's entitled to hers (although I don't think it was fair of others to judge her either).

And I do think that was a major theme in the book. She was growing and learning that everyone believes different things and that she has to be accepting of that. And that just because they don't believe the same things she does, doesn't mean they're bad people. I think her eyes really became open to the world around her.

I really liked Matt and Parker and Will. They seemed like good, strong, teenage role models. Yes, they veered slightly off the super strict path, but they were still good kids.

The camping aspect of the book was fun to read about and so was the look at first love.

Book Review- The Dream Thieves

I finally finished reading The Dream Thieves (The Raven Cycle #2) by Maggie Stiefvater.

Ronan, for one, is falling more and more deeply into his dreams, and his dreams are intruding more and more into waking life. At the end of the review of my first book in the series, I said that I wasn't sure if I would pick up the second one. I wish I hadn't. I could NOT get into this book. But as I've said before, I'm one of those people who have to finish what they started. So it took me 18 days to finish. Sigh.

I just had such a hard time following along with the story line. Why things were happening and who was who and what was what. I felt like it jumped around a lot and I just couldn't keep up. And it just wasn't interesting me.

And like in the first book, the characters didn't do anything for me. I didn't really care about any of them although I think the Gray Man had the most dimensions.

Oh well.

I gave this book a rating of 2/5.
