I just finished reading Easy by Tamarra Webber.
From Goodreads:
A girl who believes trust can be misplaced, promises are made to be broken, and loyalty is an illusion. A boy who believes truth is relative, lies can mask unbearable pain, and guilt is eternal. Will what they find in each other validate their conclusions, or disprove them all?
When Jacqueline follows her longtime boyfriend to the college of his choice, the last thing she expects is a breakup two months into sophomore year. After two weeks in shock, she wakes up to her new reality: she's single, attending a state university instead of a music conservatory, ignored by her former circle of friends, and failing a class for the first time in her life.
Leaving a party alone, Jacqueline is assaulted by her ex's frat brother. Rescued by a stranger who seems to be in the right place at the right time, she wants nothing more than to forget the attack and that night--but her savior, Lucas, sits on the back row of her econ class, sketching in a notebook and staring at her. Her friends nominate him to be the perfect rebound.
When her attacker turns stalker, Jacqueline has a choice: crumple in defeat or learn to fight back. Lucas remains protective, but he's hiding secrets of his own. Suddenly appearances are everything, and knowing who to trust is anything but easy.
I really really liked this book. Because of its sensitive topic, I'm not sure if it's right to say that I enjoyed it. But boy did I just get completely into it. I'm not sure if its because its considred a "new adult" novel (I think that's what they're calling the stories that take place in college) so that it wasn't as juvenile as some of the YA books can be or if it's just that the writing was so great. But yeah, it had me hooked.
Rape and attempted rape is such a serious topic. I think this book handled it really well. I think the author captured what I must imagine the victim must feel like and go through. And I loved the idea of the self-defense class. Such a great thing for college girls to do.
Jaqueline was a great character. I could completely sympathize with her following a boyfriend and then getting dumped and feeling lost. She just seemed completely real. And then there was her roommate, Erin, who was a sorority girl. She could so easily have been they stereotypical air-headed sorority girl, but thankfully the author decided not to portray her this way. I loved how she was bubbly but smart and had a strong backbone and morals. And Lucas. Yum! Bad boy with a fierce protective streak. His story broke my heart. I can't even imagine having to go through what he went through. But he and Jacqueline's chemistry was hot!
I cannot reccommend this book enough! This book had it all for me: an important topic, great characters, and a hot romance!
I gave this book a rating of 4.5/5.

The Sunday Salon
It was so nice to have this week off of school and I really don't want to go back tomorrow. 4 weeks til Christmas break! On Monday, I ran 16 miles and proceeded to hurt my knee pretty badly. I took the rest of the week off of running, got new shoes today and tried again. It started to bother me around mile 4 so I stopped then. Boo! We had a wonderful Thanksgiving! My hubby and I drove up to my parents house and just relaxed for a couple of days. Thanksgiving dinner is my fav and I love the leftovers! We did some "Black Friday" shopping on Thursday night. At 8, we went to Walmart. The parking lot and store was insane but the checkout lanes were only 2 groups deep. That part went so quick. Then we headed across the street to Target, got in line and the store opened 20 mins later. The actual store was really busy, but not crazy. The line to checkout was insane! It was going up and down the aisles before the checkout lane! We waited about an hour to check out. Then on Friday I went to Kohls and that line was 40 mins! Whew! Luckily I'm used to the lines at Disney so none of this really bothered me!
I finished and reviewed the following books last week:
Lucid by Adrienne Stoltz and Ron Bass
Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Book Review- Shatter Me
I just finished reading Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi.
From Goodreads:
Juliette hasn’t touched anyone in exactly 264 days.
The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.
The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war– and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.
Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.
I had read lots of good reviews about this book so I was excited to get a chance to read it.
I do have to admit that the writing took a little getting used to. There is a lot of Juliette's thoughts that are crossed out (its all part of the story) and a lot of the writing is poetic in nature. At first it was just distracting. But as I got used to it, I actually enjoyed that part and looked forward to it.
I really liked Juliette. She was such a sympathetic character. All she wanted was to be loved and to be able to touch and be touched. She had such a good heart, even with everything that she was put through. She could easily have become hard and cold-hearted but she never did.
And Adam. I couldnt decide if he was a good guy or not. I kept going back and forth between the idea that he really did love her and had been searching for her the whole time and the idea that he was just saying those things and was using her.
There was definitely a big twist at the end that I didn't see coming. And it makes me so excited to read the next book in the series, Unravel Me. I have so many questions that I hope are answered in the next book. Where did Juliette get her power? Why are a couple of people immune to it? And other questions that I don't want to list so I don't give the story away! Luckily, I have the book coming to me soon for a blog tour.
I gave this book a rating of 4/5.

Book Review- Lucid
I just finished reading Lucid by Adrienne Stoltz and Ron Bass for an Around the World ARC Tour.
From Goodreads:
What if you could dream your way into a different life? What if you could choose to live that life forever?
Sloane and Maggie have never met. Sloane is a straight-A student with a big and loving family. Maggie lives a glamorously independent life as an up-and-coming actress in New York. The two girls couldn't be more different--except for one thing. They share a secret that they can't tell a soul. At night, they dream that they're each other.
The deeper they're pulled into the promise of their own lives, the more their worlds begin to blur dangerously together. Before long, Sloane and Maggie can no longer tell which life is real and which is just a dream. They realize that eventually they will have to choose one life to wake up to, or risk spiraling into insanity. But that means giving up one world, one love, and one self, forever.
This is a dazzling debut that will steal readers' hearts.
Wow. After sititng here reading the ending, my mind is circling round and round trying to figure out just what happened. I mean, I'm pretty sure I got who the real person was at the end, but getting there was just weird.
I liked both girls. I liked reading about Maggie's glamourous-ish life but also felt so sorry for her. Her mother who acted more like a sister instead of a parent. Her father who died too soon. And the responsibility of taking care of a younger sister who she was crazy about. And I liked Sloane. I liked who she was as a person and wanted her to be happy. She seemed so normal, with the loving family yet slight teenage angst towards her mom.
I knew that it would turn out that one girl was the real one, but there was also this part of me that was just waiting for the book to turn into some sci/fi story. Luckily, it did not. But the ending completely threw me for a loop. The last couple of chapters were just so random and both girls' thoughts were thrown together so it was hard to get who was thinking and saying what. And I didn't particularly enjoy that. In fact, I really enjoyed the book up until that point. And then it just lost my interest. It was too much. I bet a lot of readers will love this ending but it just wasn't my cup of tea. Oh well.
I gave this book a rating of 3/5.

Book Review- Touch of Death
I just finished reading Touch of Death by Kelly Hashway for an Around the World ARC Tour.
From Goodreads:
Jodi Marshall isn’t sure how she went from normal teenager to walking disaster. One minute she’s in her junior year of high school, spending time with her amazing boyfriend and her best friend. The next she’s being stalked by some guy no one seems to know.
After the stranger, Alex, reveals himself, Jodi learns he’s not a normal teenager and neither is she. With a kiss that kills and a touch that brings the dead back to life, Jodi discovers she’s part of a branch of necromancers born under the 13th sign of the zodiac, Ophiuchus. A branch of necromancers that are descendents of Medusa. A branch of necromancers with poisoned blood writhing in their veins.
Jodi’s deadly to the living and even more deadly to the deceased. She has to leave her old, normal life behind before she hurts the people she loves. As if that isn’t difficult enough, Jodi discovers she’s the chosen one who has to save the rest of her kind from perishing at the hands of Hades. If she can’t figure out how to control her power, history will repeat itself, and her race will become extinct.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. And I read it all in one sitting. It's been awhile since I've done that. But I do have some issues with things.
But first: I really liked Jodi. I liked how she kept her morals about her. I loved how she cared about the "servants" and knew how wrong it was. And she was strong yet still vulnerable. A great combo. I also liked the premise of the story. I had never heard of this 13th sign of the zodiac (and I'm not sure if this is something the author made up or is widely written about--I'll have to do my research). And I liked how the story all related back to Medusa. It kept me interested.
That being said, I did have some problems with things in the story. First of all, it was completely obvious about what Jodi was after reading about her class and the lecture on Medusa. I would think she would have figured things out sooner. And I think Jodi got over the whole Matt situation way too quickly. She had such a heart about everything else but her reaction to the incident didn't really fit.
I liked the ending and thought it wrapped up well and could easily be a standalone. But I see that this is the first book of a series and I'll definitely be picking up the next one.
I gave this a rating of 3.5/5.

Book Review- Shards & Ashes
I finished reading Shards & Ashes edited by Kelley Armstrong and Melissa Marr for an Around the World ARC Tour a couple of days ago.
From Goodreads:
Gripping original stories of dystopian worlds from nine New York Times bestselling authors, edited by Melissa Marr and Kelley Armstrong
The world is gone, destroyed by human, ecological, or supernatural causes. Survivors dodge chemical warfare and cruel gods; they travel the reaches of space and inhabit underground caverns. Their enemies are disease, corrupt corporations, and one another; their resources are few, and their courage is tested.
Powerful original dystopian tales from nine bestselling authors offer bleak insight, prophetic visions, and precious glimmers of light among the shards and ashes of a ruined world.
Stories from:
Kelley Armstrong
Rachel Caine
Kami Garcia
Nancy Holder
Melissa Marr
Beth Revis
Veronica Roth
Carrie Ryan
Margaret Stohl
It's so hard for me to write reviews for anthologies. There are always some stories that I like and some that I don't.
I liked that all of the stories had to do with the dystopian world. I find that I am pretty into that genre right now so this book was right up my alley. My only complaint really is that they're all short stories (yes, I know that's the point of an anthology). But sometimes I was left wanting to read more about the characters and the story. I didn't want a lot of them to end and could easily have read whole books with those plots!
I gave this book a rating of 3.5/5.

Yeah, this is a little late :) On Saturday, 3 friends and I ran in Disney's Wine & Dine Half Marathon. It was our first 13.1 miler! We were a little nervous, but I had a blast! One of my friends said she will never do another half marathon, another friend said she'll do the other 2 we're signed up for and the third is hooked like me! I felt really good the whole time and around mile 11 I even got a burst of energy! Now we're training for the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend Half Marathon in January!

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read"
selection is:
Dance of Shadows
by Yelena Black
Publication Release Date: February 12, 2013
From Goodreads:
Dancing with someone is an act of trust. Elegant and intimate; you're close enough to kiss, close enough to feel your partner's heartbeat. But for Vanessa, dance is deadly – and she must be very careful who she trusts . . .
Vanessa Adler attends an elite ballet school – the same one her older sister, Margaret, attended before she disappeared. Vanessa feels she can never live up to her sister's shining reputation. But Vanessa, with her glorious red hair and fair skin, has a kind of power when she dances – she loses herself in the music, breathes different air, and the world around her turns to flames . . .
Soon she attracts the attention of three men: gorgeous Zep, mysterious Josh, and the great, enigmatic choreographer Josef Zhalkovsky. When Josef asks Vanessa to dance the lead in the Firebird, she has little idea of the danger that lies ahead – and the burning forces about to be unleashed . . .

Book Review- Mind Games
I finished reading Mind Games by Kiersten White early this morning for an Around the World ARC Tour.
From Goodreads:
Fia was born with flawless instincts. Her first impulse, her gut feeling, is always exactly right. Her sister, Annie, is blind to the world around her—except when her mind is gripped by strange visions of the future.
Trapped in a school that uses girls with extraordinary powers as tools for corporate espionage, Annie and Fia are forced to choose over and over between using their abilities in twisted, unthinkable ways… or risking each other’s lives by refusing to obey.
In a stunning departure from her New York Times bestselling Paranormalcy trilogy, Kiersten White delivers a slick, edgy, heartstoppingly intense psychological thriller about two sisters determined to protect each other—no matter the cost.
I absolutely ADORE the Paranormalcy series by Kiersten White so I was sooo excited when I got to read this one! And while I enjoyed it, I definitely love the Paranormalcy series more.
Mind Games started off confusing for me. I couldn't figure out what was happening. Some chapters were flashbacks and some were current day. Unfortunately, I don't really like feeling confused.
That being said, I really liked the characters. A lot of Fia's thoughts are in parentheses and at first that got on my nerves but then it just became part of her personality. I liked that she had to be so tough but she was so protective of her sister and really just wanted to be loved. I also liked Annie. She just wanted to feel normal for once, what with her disability and her special abilities. And James. A guy who is so wrong yet so right. I liked him right away. His heart is in the right place even if his actions aren't always.
I think this book was too short (only 200-something pages). I think if maybe the school had been explained more then I wouldn't have had such a hard time figuring things out. That being said, I will definitely be picking up the next book in this series!
I gave this book a rating of 3.5/5.
Mind Games will be released on February 19, 2013.
This book fulfills items in the following challenges:
2012 Reading Challenge 150+: 80
2012 ARC Reading Challenge: 66
2012 Young Adult Reading Challenge: 69
*FTC Disclosure: I was given this book for free for an honest review as part of the Around the World Tours.

The Sunday Salon
Wow! I can't believe its already November! This past week was pretty laid back. We didn't do anything for Halloween and since we live in a condo, we didn't have a single trick or treater. I still dressed my puppy in her Halloween dress though. She hates being dressed up and gets all mopey the whole time. Today we went to see Wreck-It Ralph. Such a GREAT movie and I'm so proud to have two friends who worked on it!
I finished and reviewed the following books last week:
Fifty Shades Freed by E.L. James
Just One Day by Gayle Forman
I fulfilled items in the following challenges last week:
2012 Reading Challenge 150+: 78, 79
Completely Contemp Challenge 2012: 2011-4
2012 Mammoth Book Challenge: 8
2012 ARC Reading Challenge: 65
What's in a Name? 5 Challenge: Something You'd Find on a Calendar
2012 Young Adult Reading Challenge: 68
I am currently reading Mind Games by Kiersten White and up next is Shards & Ashes edited by Melissa Marr and Kelley Armstrong.

Book Review- Just One Day
A little earlier, I finished reading Just One Day by Gayle Forman for an Around the World ARC Tour.
From Goodreads:
A breathtaking journey toward self-discovery and true love, from the author of If I Stay.
When sheltered American good girl Allyson "LuLu" Healey first meets laid-back Dutch actor Willem De Ruiter at an underground performance of Twelfth Night in England, there’s an undeniable spark. After just one day together, that spark bursts into a flame, or so it seems to Allyson, until the following morning, when she wakes up after a whirlwind day in Paris to discover that Willem has left. Over the next year, Allyson embarks on a journey to come to terms with the narrow confines of her life, and through Shakespeare, travel, and a quest for her almost-true-love, to break free of those confines.
Just One Day is the first in a sweepingly romantic duet of novels. Willem’s story—Just One Year—is coming soon!
I can't decide how I feel about this book. For the first part, it was okay. I thought it was a little odd that this girl who is a goody goody and always follows the rules suddenly goes off with this guy to Paris for a day, but I went with it. I liked reading about the different parts of Europe that Allyson went to and reminiscing about my trip 10 years ago.
I did not like the middle part. Allyson was just too mopey and depressing. I mean, she was only with the guy for one day! I understand that she went through something tough but I just wanted to say "Get over it and move on!" Especially since she was starting college and had so been looking forward to it. At that point in the book, I kind of just wanted it be over.
But then towards the end, I got back into the story again. And what I thought was going to be the end felt right. The door to that part of her life was shut. But it didn't end there. It continued for just a couple of more pages. And after the last sentence I found myself shouting "No! The book can't just end there!" I didn't realize how much I wanted the book to continue until then. And now I'm anxiously waiting until the next book comes out telling Willem's side!
Just One Day will be released on January 8, 2013.
I gave this book a rating of 3.5/5.

2012 Sophomore Reading Challenge- November Update
What books count towards the SRC?
Any second YA or MG book published by an author in 2012 counts – it can be the second in a series, a new series, or a standalone. The only requirement is that it is the SECOND book the author has published in the YA or MG realm (and it must publish in 2012 in your home country)! I have started a Goodreads list HERE – as you can see, there are probably many many books on that list you are planning on reading already
When does the challenge run?
Books read before January 2013 count for this challenge.
Why should I join this challenge?
Reading debut novels is AWESOME. It is by far my favorite challenge – it allows me to find many new authors that I love. What better way to support these authors than to read their next published book?
What are the guidelines of the challenge?
Your challenge is to read 10 sophomore YA/MG novels in 2012. To officially participate, you need a Goodreads account or blog where you post reviews in English.
What should I do if I’m an author coming out with a sophomore novel?
I would love to feature you on my blog! Please contact me via THIS FORM or by e-mail (shanynlee at gmail.com).
How do I join?
Link your blog or Goodreads account below, and make a list of the sophomore novels you’re looking forward to
There will be prize packs given away to challenge participants throughout next year. You will receive an automatic entry for signing up to participate – options for additional entries will be announced at the time of the giveway.
2012 Standalone Reading Challenge- November Update
Why a Standalone Reading Challenge?
There's a challenge for Debuts, there's a challenge for Sophomores, why not a challenge for Standalones?
So what's the challenge?
To read 15 standalone YA books in 2012!
What books count towards the 2012 Standalone Reading Challenge?
Any Young Adult standalone book that is released between December 27, 2011 and December 31, 2012. Any format (paperback, hardcover, e-book, ARC) counts, but they must be read during the year 2012.
Where can I find out which books can be read for the SARC?
We have started a list for you HERE. Please note, this list is public and won't be 100% accurate. We will try to keep it updated as best as we can. If you know of any standalones we may have missed, please feel free to add to this list.
I'm an author with a standalone novel coming out in 2012!
If you're an author with a standalone novel releasing in 2012, whether its a debut or not, you can participate too. It would be super spectacular if you would like to either donate a book/swag or sign up for an interview/promotional post! Please fill out the form HERE.
Who can participate?
Anyone with a blog or a Goodreads account where they are able to post reviews (in English) can participate.
Why should I sign up?
One, there will be a lot of fun. Two, there will be periodic prize packs (more info to come) given out to participators, as well as fun posts from and interviews with authors who have standalone YA novels releasing in 2012. And three, its a fun way to promote those novels that aren't part of a series/trilogy!
